Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello , I have been diagnosed with Ty 2 and also my Cholestrol level is very high, found out Monday 17th this month, and im a little bit scared , i know nothing, so im hoping to learn something here, i will be going to the D clinic in a few weeks which is run by my docter, and see a dietitian in November, i also have an underactive Thyroid and have had a suspected mini stroke, blimey! sounds even worse seeing it all written down.
I am on Gliclazide 80mgs twice a day and Metformin 500gms twice a day, plus thyroxine and medication for the cholestrol.
I don't know if i am behaving like a complete baby or over reacting, but since Monday i have just felt scared and worried, and very down, so any info that would give me a start would be very gratefully recieved. Thank you Karan x

Hi Karan, wlecome to the forum 🙂 First of all - don't panic! It can be a shock to receive a diagnosis of diabetes, but the good news is that now you have been diagnosed you are receiving help and treatment to get things under control. Diabetes can be managed well with the right amount of effort and knowledge, and many people find that their diagnosis has actually changed their lives for the better as they modify their diet and icrease their activity levels - so it's far from being all gloom and doom!

I would suggest you start by reading Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter. These will give you a good insight into what to expect and how to approach managing things. I would also highly recommend getting a copy of Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker - many of our members have found this tremendously useful and reassuring. Have a browse of our Useful links thread also.

Please feel free to ask us any questions you may have - nothing is considered 'silly'. There are lots of friendly, experienced people here who will do their best to help you out and support you, so you are not alone 🙂

Hi Karan

I endorse what Northerner says about being healthier and fitter after diagnosis. It's a lot to take on board, but baby steps will get you there.

Welcome to the forum Karan 🙂

Karen hi and a warm welcome to the forum

Welcome to the forum Karan. 🙂

I'm a now reformed Type 2 diabetic who was diagnosed in October 2009. Oh! My 3rd anniversary is coming up soon!!

Anyway, from feeling like a decripit 60yr old, I now feel more like a slightly decrepit 30yr old!! Anyway, fear not, if you can get on top of your symptoms then you can look forward to a much happier and healthier life.

Good luck!!

Andy (I'm 48, by the way) HB 🙂

Hi Karen, welcome to the forum. I remember feeling like you 1 year ago when first diagnosed. Since then I have got to grips with what to do and can truly say I feel better for it.

Take it a little at a time and you will soon be a bit more relaxed and stay around and pick up some wonderful support from here.

Welcome Karan, as you are on Gliclazide you need to be aware of `Hypos`and carry some form of glucose with you (jelly babies are a favorite!). And arm yourself with a Blood Glucose meter. Regards Johnco.
