Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
 Hi I'm Verity and to be honest, completely confused by the diagnosis of diabetes, going by my recent blood test results.

Hi Verity, welcome to the forum 🙂 Don't worry, hopefully we can help you get to grips with what it's all about! What are your recent results, that are causing the confusion?

Welcome Verity to the forum, you will find the members here very helpful, just let us know whats up.

Welcome to the forum Verity 🙂

I think we were all confused at first Verity, I sure was, but you will get to grips with it little by little in your own time.

Hi and welcome to the forum

The confusion i am having is that, I was rushed into hospital just before christmas, after collapsing. I had a sugar reading of 10.2. I was then referred back to my local gp for a follow up blood test. That came back at 5.7. They have found no sugar in my urine and everytime i have had my sugar levels checked they have been too low (the last one being 3.2). I have also had keytones, but only a small amount. I don't eat so have regular hypos, but can't understand why they are saying I have type 2 diabetes if my levels are always low. I've spent the last three weeks in a complete state about it all. Can anyone else understand this?

Hello Verity and welcome to the forums.

It sounds like the ketones are because you are not eating. This will happen in a non-diabetic who eats little carbs. If your body can't get enough energy from your food - it starts to burn fats and the ketones are a by product of that.

Have you had a glucose tolerance test ? or a HbA1c ?

Your levels other than the 10.2 don't seem high but as you are not eating do you know what kind of levels you would be having when tou do eat. Hence why I asked about whether you have had any tests.

We don't know what tests you have had or what the Drs have based their diagnosis on. Could you make an appointment with your Dr and ask them to explain the diagnosis and tell them why you are confused.

It sounds like you need to get your GP to do a few more tests. Possibly they have labelelled you as a Type 2 due to age - it seems they assume any adult with diabetes must be a Type 2. If there any possibility to get your GP to refer you to a hospital clinic for them to do further tests?

What sort of levels do you get on waking in the morning? (the fasting reading)

If you haven't been eating properly, then possibly the ketones are from your body turning to other sources to fuel itself.

hi... and welcome to the forum. hope you get things sort out soon and feel less anxious about it all x

I had a HbA1c done three weeks ago and it was 5.7, but i think they are basing my diagnosis on the fact i am overweight, my mother has type 2 and the fact i had gestational diabetes 6 years ago. They have said they cannot test me further until i am eating properly. They are sending me for the retina check and have tested my feet. Think what they are basically saying to me is that my risk factors are so high, that they are treating me as a diabetic. I think this is wrong if i'm actually not yet. I have seen my gp again this morning and she kept on saying about me having diabetes, and that i needed to test my sugars regularly and everything, but i don't honestly believe that i am.

Well, you are correct that a HbA1c of 5.7% would not meet the criteria for being diagnosed diabetic under the WHO guidelines, but I believe the 5.7% does put you into the pre-diabetes area.

But consider one idea, if you did spend a few days testing yourself and you were in a relatively normal range all the time, then you would have evidence to show your Doctor that she was wrong. :D

Welcome to the forum Verity, hopefully some regular testing will be able to show whether you are Diabetic or not and will put your mind at ease 🙂
