Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi Everyone,

I'm new to the site and to having Diabetes and to be honest I don't think it has really sunk in yet and am in denial really still.

I got diagnosed with type 2 a week ago after finally getting my doctors to give me a blood test after numerous trips back and forth with various different problems that all pointed to diabetes but they never caught on and i had to self diagnose through using the internet (not always a good idea I know, but this time I knew there was a problem).

I just dont know what I do next. The Doc put me on tablets and then refered me to the nurse, the nurse did all the checks but that as far as its gone. Ive had no advice, no tips nothing and im totally lost and just dont know what to do next!

Its so much to take on and I feel like im all alone and just need advice on what to do next and what to expect??

Any advice would be welcome 🙂

Thanks
Gem

Hi Gem and a warm welcome to the forum dont panic your heads in a spin right now, a hundred and one questions in your head i guess, its good you have found this place so early on in your diagnosis, its a fantastic place to be you are amongst genuine caring people who know exactly what your going through,if you have any questions then please dont hestitate to ask.

I would reccommend you buy your first piece of literature and this book is the best place to start http://www.amazon.co.uk/Type-Diabetes-Essential-Diagnosed-Patient-expert/dp/1841198048/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1308687463&sr=8-1 I bought the book back in March 09 and it was a fantastic insight into diabetes.

Hi Gem. Welcome 🙂

What tablets are you on ?

Your story is not uncommon. GPs seem to rely on patients being able to glean information for themselves (including diagnoses it seems 😱) and they take the salary.

I hope we can fill in some of the gaps for you.🙂

Hi Gem, welcome to the forum 🙂 Don't worry, you are not alone and there are lots of lovely friendly and knowledgeable people here who can hopefully answer your questions and calm your concerns. To begin with, have a look at the Useful links thread - try and get a copy of the Gretchen Becker book, it will really help you.

There are courses available for you to learn about diabetes and how to manage it, examples are called Xpert and DESMOND - ask your nurse or doctor about getting you enrolled on whatever is available in your area. Try not to become overwhelmed with all the information out there, which may be conflicting. Diabetes is a very individual condition, so you need to learn how things affect you personally. The best way to do this is to test your blood sugars before and one or two hours after eating - this will help you understand what types of food you can tolerate well, and in what quantities. Have a look at the suggestions for GL Diet books - these will teach your how to choose and combine foods that will release their energy slowly and not send your blood sugars too high.

This link tells you what you should expect from the NHS:

Please feel free to ask anything that is worrying or confusing you! 🙂

Nice to 'meet' you too Tosk 🙂 If you have any questions from your perspective, please do ask, many of our members are partners, parents or carers of the person with diabetes and see things from a different perspective. 🙂
