Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi! I?m John,
I was told the day before the Royal Wedding that I had diabetes; I suspected I was, with the symptoms I had, my mother had it and I gather that it could be passed down from a close relative.
My first blood test came back with a reading of 14 when it should have been 7, the nurse told me.
On Wednesday the second blood test showed down to 12.
I was told that with a reading as high a patient is usually prescribed tablets straight away, but as I indicated earlier that I would prefer dieting, she had discussed it with my doctor and they decided no tablets.
Healthy diet and more exercise, & lose weight.

Hi John and a warm welcome to the forum

Hi John, welcome to the forum 🙂 It's certainly possible to continue to improve without the need for medication now that you have had the diagnosis and can start making those adaptations to your diet and activity levels. There are lots of helpful, friendly and experienced people here who will try their best to answer any questions you may have, so please ask if anything is unclear or concerns you. A very highly recommended book is Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker, which will help you get to grips with things, plus there are links to more information on our Useful links thread 🙂

Welcome to the forum John 🙂

Welcome John. It such a shock to the system when first diagnosed. Your level is already going in the right direction so keep up with the hardwork you are putting 🙂

I was also lucky enough to be given a chance to get Diabetes under control through diet and exercise when first diagnosed my level was similar to your and have managed to lower the level still a long away to go for me to get it at the right level

HI John. Welcome 🙂

If you find you can't improve enough on diet/exercise, don't be afraid to go onto tablets. They merely help to do what you're already doing.

No slacking now !! :D

Hi and welcome John,

I started off with blood glucose readings in the teens and now rarely go above 8. You'll find that with a bit of tweaking with your diet and walking regularly your numbers will continue to improve. I think it very much depends on each individual's doctors as to whether or not you are put on medication straight away. In my case, I didn't get a choice and the Metformin helps a bit but the rest is all up to you.

Good luck!

Donna :🙂
