Hello i am new to this sight so hello everyone x
i have been getting constant nagging about my levels i stared off being really good 6.1 even got to a 5.4 at one stage then i was told by the dr you don't need to test more than once a day (test strip cut backs ) and now i'm getting in to a constant battle over my hba1c being 8.6 and slowly creeping up i know i have to test more often and when i do i get amazing control but get depressed when i am feeling guilty about ordering test strips has anyone else got the same problem with there GPS

Hi daf welcome to the forum, have you been diabetic long

Welcome to the forum DAF2104. Can you tell us a bit more about your meds. What are you taking and when ?

Many of the Type 2's have issues getting their test strips on prescription - it is not so much an issue for Type1's.

Can I ask if you drive as if you do the DVLA recommend that anyone treated with insulin test their blood sugars before driving - that would mean you would need a reasonable amount of test strips just to fulfill that - never mind adding in testing if you feel hypo or hyper.

Hi Daf, welcome! I haven't ever heard of a type 1 being restricted to 1 test a day, that sounds ridiculous, I use between 4 and 10 a day, without which I would be seriously lost! What meds are you on? Don't feel bad about ordering strips, your health is more important than your GP's money worries

Hi and welcome Daf.🙂

What regime are you on (eg. MDI, pump, etc) ?

One test per day is dangerous to the extreme. How would you know if you were hypo or just feeling a bit off ?

Your GP is setting a very unhealthy policy. 😡

Hi daf2104, welcome to the forum 🙂 If you are on insulin (suggested by the fact you are Type 1) then you should not be restricted on the number of test strips you can use - certainly not just one per day! Do NOT feel guilty about using test strips if testing helps to control your levels, or if you feel hypo, need to test before driving etc. I'm on 4 injections a day and wouldn't dream of injecting without testing my levels first, because I need to know how much to inject and this will partly be dependent on my levels. What insulin regime are you on? If you are on two injections a day you may have fewer reasons to test, but I would urge you to discuss the possibility of going on to multiple daily injections (MDI or 'basal/bolus'). If you're already on MDI then have you been taught carb-counting, on a course (e.g. DAFNE)?

From what you say, you are seeing your GP about your diabetes - I would ask to be referred to a consultant-led clinic who will understand your requirements better.

Please feel free to ask any questions you may have - nothing is considered 'silly' and we'll do our best to help 🙂

Welcome Daf. If you live in England, then you need to quote NICE guidelines to doctor responsible for prescribing your strips; there are equivalents for Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland, so just ask for the appropriate weblink.

Welcome to the forum Daf 🙂

i would agree with rob that does sound like a dodgy doc!! i am on levemir and novorapid and i test at least 6 times a day.
