Welcome to the forum, I hope you will find lots of useful tips and advice but remember that managing your condition can be very individual and will depend on what your HbA1C is, whether you take medication so not all approaches will suit everyone. If you are willing to share a bit about your diagnosis then people can point you in the right direction for things that would be appropriate for you to try.

It has come as a bit of a shock as I have put myself on a low carb, low sugar diet and lost 1 1/2 stone since December. Do you think exercise can have a beneficial affect on my sugar level?
Oh yes exercise helps improve sugar levels depending on the exercise. Also can help with weight loss too.
Walking is really good for regulating levels.
Are you on any insulin?
 
I have literary had a phone call from my GP 2 hours ago telling me the results of my blood test taken at my annual 'older persons' check up. He is trying to get me set up with an appointment before I go on holiday next Thursday. I suppose I will find out then what medication I will need.
 
My reading in January was 46 it is now 48. Have been in the pre-diabetic range since 2023.

I would think medication would not be appropriate and just paying a bit more attention to diet hopefully will be sufficient. Many people don't quite appreciate that it is all carbohydrates that convert to glucose so a few substitutions for any of the higher carb foods you are having would help.

Thanks all for your advice and especially the links. I was never a big ‘visible’ sugar user but I am aware of the ‘hidden’ sugars in foods. I’ve cut out all breads apart from the very odd flat bread, virtually all potatoes (don’t like mashed or baked but I do like the odd chip including sweet potato chips and I love roasters but they are now a no, no). I totally agree that exercise and diet are the way I would like to go, I’m on enough medication as it is. Exercise shouldn’t be a problem. I’m a ‘young’ 67 year old wHo was extremely fit until 20000, but I was diagnosed with M.E./C.F.S., and over the last 3 years have been virtually housebound. However, after starting taking medical cannabis, my symptoms are improving, so there should be no excuse for me not getting out for walks.

Your last HbA1c has just tickled into the diabetes zone, so it’s likely that a few tweaks to your menu, may help you steer your BGs gently back down again. As we age, its not uncommon for our HbA1cs to gradually edge upwards, so it might be helpful to have a chat with your GP and see what an average HbA1c increase might be at your age?

Have you been keeping an eye on your daily total carb intake since you have started your low carb approach. Perhaos reducing that a little further might help?

And well done on the weight loss, that can really help improve insulin sensitivity, and pancreatic function.
