Hi @murf and welcome to the forum - I'm assuming the 54 was your HbA1c result - this is not too far outside of normal range - with a few minor lifestyle changes it is possible to get the number down - there are many Type 2 users on the forum who can provide you with better pointers than I can - feel free to ask as many questions as you have - we're all here to help each other

Hello @murf welcome to the Forum 🙂 . There are lots of members with Type 2 who will able to share their knowledge with you....

Sorry you've had to join us but welcome. Have you been put on medication, been given advice on diet, advised to lose weight and become more active? Sorry if that sounds intrusive but those are the things that managing T2 involves, so knowing where you are means any advice can be tailored to your specific needs.

Hi @murf, welcome to the forum. Not somewhere you probably want to be but when dealing with diabetes, one of the best places for information, advice and support. I've been type 2 since October 2024 and the help I got from the people here has been fantastic. My HbA1c was a bit higher than yours and with everything I have taken onboard from the people here I have come close to reducing my HbA1c by nearly 50% based on results from January.

There are three levers that can be used to improve your situation:

Weight loss
Diet and
Exercise.

Providing the kind of information that @Martin.A mentions really helps people to give you the best information for your position.

There are plenty of nice things you can have and still be low carb, low carb is suggested as being no more than 130g carbs not just sugar per day, it is not NO carbs. The Freshwell program is based on just that so have a look at this link. https://lowcarbfreshwell.com/
I am disappointed that you have not been given the opportunity to try first with dietary changes before medication ad there is a fair chance that it would be sufficient.

Hi and welcome. Bear in mind its (generally) all carbs, not just sweet/sugary things, eg: potato, rice, bread, pastry, baked goods, pasta, etc, etc. Also be careful with fruit, as some are high carb. Check out the learning zone on here and the lowcarbfreshwell website and the sugarfreelondoner website, and the Carbs and Cals book, Cheers.

Welcome to the forum @murf

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis :(

To get you started, you might like to check out the Learning Zone (the orange tab in the main menu), which is packed full of information, and bite-sized modules that you can work through at your own pace.

Plus keep asking questions here on the forum too - nothing will be considered too obvious or ‘silly’ 🙂
