At risk of diabetes
Hello, I’m so pleased to be here after checking my blood results online this week. I have two red flags, TSH 6.58 and my HbA1c comment section states if reading is 42-47 please refer to National Diabetes Prevention Programme. I have Essential Thrombocythaemia which is treated with Interferon injections monthly. Interferon can potentially cause Hypothyroidism so lots to discuss at my next appointment 11/11. Can I ask for information re Blood Glucose Monitors? So many to choose from, but want one fit for purpose. I’m really worried about these new findings. Thanks for reading.

Welcome to the big family @BuzzBee 🙂
If you want more information on blood glucose monitors, perhaps you could talk to your GP about this and they might be able to support you.

Hi @BuzzBee and welcome to the group no one wants to join! 🙂

As it seems that you are pre-diabetic, it's unlikely you will be able to get a monitor funded by then NHS. Even full blown Type 2s don't usually qualify. You are best getting one which has cheaper refills for testing strips. I use the Gluco Navii and the other decent one usually recommended here is the Spirit Tee2. When I got mine, by stating I was diabetic I got the VAT knocked off the price, so it's always worth checking that from whichever supplier you use.

It's always harder when you have more complex medical needs or more than one condition. However, you should be able to turn your diabetes around with just a few tweaks to your diet: reducing the amount of total carbs you eat. This includes bread, spuds, pasta and rice in addition to the more obvious carbs like biscuits and cake. This means you shouldn't need medication for your diabetes, so one less thing to worry about.

Any questions, please just shout out...there will always be someone who has the answer!

What was your actual HbA1C result as what you mention above just indicates the range that would be classed as 'at risk' or prediabetes and if your result falls in that range then you may be referred to a diabetes prevention program which essentially would advise about making life style changes to lower your level and stop any increase which would put you into a diabetes diagnosis. Sometime this referral can take some time to happen but meanwhile there is plenty you can do to start making some changes.
There is good information in this link that may give you some ideas of where to start. https://lowcarbfreshwell.com/

This just sounds like an information comment not your result. What was the actual number?

37mmols - 5.5% which I gather is a pre diabetic alert.

Thank you!

You need to compare your reading of 37 to this range. 37 isn’t between 42 and 47 so you won’t be referred to the pre diabetes program because you don’t have pre diabetes

Welcome to the forum @BuzzBee

Hope you are reassured about your HbA1c result. Do chat things through at your appointment to get your Drs advice, but at 37mmol/mol it does appear that you would not currently normally be considered at risk of diabetes.
