Relationship to Diabetes

Hi all.

I was diagnosed 2 weeks ago, been feeling unwell for nearly 2 years, went last year to the doctors and had loads of blood tests, unfortunately they didn't test for diabetes.
Became very ill recently, went back and was immediately diagnosed.

Don't think its hit home yet. My glucose levels are up and down like a yo yo.

I haven't had much info from my health care team as yet, though seeing the nurse in a fortnight, so will have a good look here and might have some questions.

Davey

Hi Davey, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear of your diagnosis, it sounds as though they might have missed the reason for you feeling unwell all this time :( The good news is that, now you are diagnosed you can set about putting things right and once your blood sugar levels begin to fall to more normal levels you will start to feel much, much better. Do you have a meter so you can test your blood sugar? Have a read of the 'Useful links' sticky at the top of the Newbies section - a particularly good thing to get hold of is the Gretchen Becker book. This will help you understand what to expect and what you need to do to manage your diabetes well. People often find they are far healthier after being given the 'push' of diagnosis, so it's not all bad news.

If you have any questions, please ask - nothing is considered 'silly'! 🙂

Welcome Davey!

Have a browse of the sticky at the top of the newbies section. That covers a lot of really useful stuff.

My standard response is also to point people in the direction of a course run by the NHS called Diabetes X-Pert. It's a six week job for one afternoon per week and it gave me a really good starting point. Ask your GP or Nurse (DSN) about it the next time that you see them to see if one is available in your area (and if you're interested!).

Andy 🙂

Thank you for the welcome's and the advice already.

Yes I have a blood test kit, despite the doctor saying I didn't need one. And have just ordered the book you all suggested.
