Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello all,

New to the site and just been diagnosed with type 2 Diabetes ( Friday) put on tablets straightaway. This comes with a recent diagnoses of sleep apnoea which I have to use a machine for at night and Fibromyalgia they think even though I'm having a full spinal MIR next week to check for Spinal Stenosis.

Came as a total shock so still trying to get my head round things any meal ideas would be great.

Thanks
Carol Xx

Welcome to the forum, it sounds as though you have a lot to deal with at the moment. Just take things one step at a time as you learn a little more
The diabetes meds and dosage may affect peoples food suggestions, so if you are happy to share those details they may be helpful.

Thank you for your reply.
Its only day 2 of being on meds, trying to tweaking my diet a little at the moment.

Shopping was a different experience yesterday looking at labels.

Were you told what your HbA1C is as that will indicate how much work you will need to do.
It will become second nature looking at the labels but make sure you look at the carbohydrate value in the nutritional information not the sugar or traffic light info as that is very misleading when you are diabetic.
Have a look at this link for some ideas for modifying your diet which if your mediation is just metformin would be very suitable. https://lowcarbfreshwell.com/

My HbA1C was 54, yes medication is metformin once a day for the first week then two a day after that repeat bloods in 3 months time.
Thanks for the link and helpful information I will check it out.

That HbA1C is only a little way over the diagnostic threshold so you sound to have a GP who reaches for the prescription pad a bit easily before giving an opportunity to make the dietary changes for 3 months which some will do as it is perfectly possible to reduce blood glucose from that levels without meds for many people.
Make sure you take the metformin with food as that will minimise any stomach issues.

Your story is similar to mine - only diagnosed 6 days ago on Metformin same dose as yours - I don't know my HbA1c yet as was told over the phone -- I am dieting like the clappers and taking out the bad stuff - I reckon you have got this as you have come on here and not buried your head in the sand - Good Luck

I always feel the term dieting is wrong as how you need to look at it is a new way of eating for life.
It is a pity the same word is used for the range of foods that are eaten and a quick short term fix to a problem.

Indeed maybe poor choice of word .. but given I need to lose weight fast and avoid certain foods the word dieting comes to mind. Some diabetic diets are very restrictive for a short period of time 800 - 1200 calories - shake or soup only.

Hi Carol, welcome. I'm new too, diagnosed about 3 weeks ago (but was pre-diabetic for 2 years before). My levels were 56 then 52 on repeat a month later. I'm trying 3 months of diet control to see if I can manage it that way.
The Freshwell app has been amazing at helping me sort through the idea of going low carb. There are various meal plans and suggestions on there so it takes some stress from meal planning around diabetes.

On the cover of the Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy the words 'Don't Panic' are printed, in large friendly letters - I think they are appropriate here - you are not far out of the normal range, and - assuming that you are an ordinary type two like me, diet control is very possible, and hopefully the Metformin will not cause problems.
If it does, I advise the purchase of a professional quality carpet and upholstery cleaner.
I eat low carb, avoiding anything over 10% carbs - but I eat anything else.
I do have some high cocoa chocolate, but only have one square.
I find it easy, though I do need to avoid temptation where I can - only having berries as other fruit would be unwise and it would also be eaten.
