I’m not tech savvy so will need some help navigating the forum. It would be lovely to communicate with someone in the vicinity of Aylsham in Norfolk?

Hi @Mike T and welcome to the forum. Well, you have got a post up and a reply so you are 90% of the way there when it comes to navigating the forum. Ask for any help you need, we work on the principle that there is no such thing as a silly question.

How did you come to be diagnosed?

My doctor sent me to the diabetic clinic in the hospital where they carried out the sugar test and bloods over an extended period during one day. Which triggered a series of 3 monthly blood tests which showed a raised blood count

Have you got the results? If not, ask your surgery for your HbA1c result and ask for the actual numbers, not high or something like that.

The number is good guide of where you fit into the diabetes spectrum and help you get a perspective on things. You are the same vintage or thereabouts as me in what I call wrinkly territory and in my opinion that has some implications on how to handle the diabetes.

Although i am new to Diabetes UK, i am not new to Diabetes, which i have been struggling with for over a dozen years.
My remission journey started 3 years ago when i decided to lose weight. Being 18st 11 lbs i have reduced my weight to 10st 11 lbs and have maintained this weight now for a couple of years now, and come off insulin etc. My difficulty has been in having a recognised diet which i could use ongoing and for the long term. All my improvement in health etc have i must be honest, have been in spite of my doctors who have not been a source for confidence in using diet as a mechanism for change and only prescribe tablets rather than a reasonable regime. Because of the weight loss my fitness has improved enormously and i carryout a 4km walk and indoor cycling and core exercises every single day and enjoy all the normal household chores etc including cooking all my meals from scratch. The rub now is that my bloods do range from 46 - 66 and there would seem to be no logic to them. Joining Diabetes UK is my last resort at tying down my diet as i have had no help from the local Diabetic clinic because of my age and the perception that what i have been doing is the right way to go. With your help I’d like to tweak my diet and get involved with a like minded local group.

You have been dealing with your condition for quite a while but it seems you have made some very positive actions to keep up with exercise and diet.
It is easy for carb intake to creep up and that could be the reason for your variable HbA1C. You may benefit from some strategic testing of your meals, testing before you eat and after 2 hours will tell you if you have coped with that particular meal if the increase is less than 2-3mmol/l or no more than 8-8.5 mmol/l after 2 hours.
Your aim would be 4-7mmol/l before meals.
Keeping a food diary with an estimate of the amount of carbs together with blood glucose readings could give you a clue as to where the problem is.
This link may give you a few new ideas as well for assessing your diet. https://lowcarbfreshwell.com/. This may be suitable but may depend if you are now on any other medication, you say you are no longer on insulin but what about any others.

Welcome to the forum @Mike T

And congratulations on your amazing weight loss - great to hear it has allowed you to be more active too. Quite an inspirational story!

If you’d like a brief overview of some of the features and functions of the forum, you might find this thread helpful?

Some of which you’ve worked out already, of course!
