Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi my name is sue ,I've recently been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, I'm struggling with my glucose levels and have been for at least a month now

Hi and welcome.

Do you know what your HbA1c result was? This is the blood test used to diagnose and keep track of your diabetes and will usually be a number in excess of 47mmols/mol.
Have you ben given any medication to help you manage your diabetes and if so, what?
What if any dietary advice have you been given?

It sounds like you are testing with a home BG meter, is that correct? If so, when are you testing and what sort of readings are you getting?

Sorry for all the questions, but the more info you can give us, the better we can advise and support you.

I would just like to add that whilst a diabetes diagnosis is overwhelming and scary, for many of us, it has been the gateway or kick up the pants 🙄 we needed to improve our diet and lifestyle and weight and become healthier ,rather than the opposite, so whilst it takes a bit of effort to manage it, it can actually have a positive rather than a negative outcome. I fully expect to live longer and have a better quality of life as a result of changing my diet and lifestyle and I would not have done that without my diabetes diagnosis.

Welcome @retiro 2017 🙂 Can you tell us a little more about your struggles? What’s your blood sugar? Are you on any meds?

Hi I'm on metformin 2000 mg,1000 in the morning and 1000 tea time, I was very ill 4 weeks ago very high blood pressure which was 190 /110also my glucose was 26.6 and my potassium levels was far too low I was so poorly but on the mend blood pressure and potassium good, glucose is ow slowly down to 11.6 I'm not having alcohol or fizzy drinks x

Sorry to hear that @retiro 2017 That must have been stressful and frightening. I’m glad to hear you’re on the mend. 11.6 blood sugar is much better. Hopefully that will continue to improve.

Thank you I'm trying, I'm struggling with food???cannot get my head around the food, I'm sure it will just slot into place

A good starting place is to look at what you were eating pre-diagnosis @retiro 2017 and work out places where you can reduce carbs and add green veg. Sugar will be an obvious carb to reduce, but all carbs can put your blood sugar up, so you’ll also be looking at things like bread, rice, potatoes and pasta. You could try substitutes, eg cauliflower rice, just reduce your portion, or change the whole meal composition.

Do you have a home blood glucose meter? If so, that will help you find what foods/meals work for you.

What is the problem with what to eat?

Perhaps this link may give you some ideas for what to eat, there is some good explanation and meal plans to suit various tastes and budget, it is a low carb approach which many have found successful. https://lowcarbfreshwell.com/
Make sure you take into account your other medical issues when making the changes.

There is no need to eat foods you don't like but it may be an opportunity to try things by cooking or having them in different ways.
You need to be a bit careful with fruit as it can be high carb except berries with are pretty low but tropical fruits, bananas, mango, pineapple are pretty high with apples, oranges, pears, peaches somewhere in between so portion control is needed.

Hi I do watch my fruit in take I've made a fruit salad 1 large spoon full so i get a good mixture which I have with Greek yoghurt and crushed pistachio on top soon nice and refreshing in this heat ,my dinner treat with 2 x rivita cucumber tomato and maybe a slice of meat I have my main meal about 6pm

Hi I haven't been given anything when I was diagnosed no advice, no help ,it's difficult living in Spain, the language barrier ,and there's no support system for you no diabetic nurse all we get is a blood test every 3 months!!!unless problems in-between bloods ,so just put on metformin 2000 mg a day and get on with it basically

Psi do test every morning before breakfast, after I was rushed into hospital a month ago reading was 26.9 in hospital b/p 190/110 I was very ill but I've slowly got down to 10.7 which I know is still high but much better
