Relationship to Diabetes

Hi I’m pre diabetic/type2 numbers keep changing. Have decided today to start making changes to my lifestyle, need to lose at least 3 stone, starting to look at the carbs in my diet . Walk everyday with dogs, go to the gym once a week, cook from scratch every day, I gave the DN a menu of what I eat over a week, she was impressed at the changes I had made. Until I told her that was a normal week I hadn’t changed anything yet, I had been hoping she could point out to me where I was going wrong. So hopefully will get a better idea from this site.

Can you give us an idea of an average daily menu and see if we can make some suggestions. Unfortunately he NHS still recommends the Eatwell plate for people with diabetes which can contain too many carbs for many of us, which is why many health care professionals find that patients need increasingly stronger medication which leads them to conclude diabetes is progressive, but if you reduce carbs significantly many people can push their diabetes into remission. Clearly, if you are just prediabetic, you shouldn't need to make too many adjustments to push your HbA1c back down into the normal zone.

Something that many people here on the forum find beneficial is home testing of Blood Glucose (BG) levels so that you can "see" numerically which foods cause your BG the most upheaval and remove or reduce your portion size and frequency of eating those particular foods. Bread, pasta (both wholemeal) and porridge were some of the biggest issues for me that I needed to cut from my diet and indeed anything made with wheat flour. I can manage a few potatoes occasionally but I rarely have them these days. Plenty of other nice tasty things to eat.
 
Menu today, 1 slice homemade sourdough bread, butter and 2 poached eggs, hot water with lemon slice, lunch home made veg soup, with cream cheese, wrap with prawns And coldslaw, decaf coffee. With milk, dinner, chicken thigh tray bake with 2 new potatoes, carrot broccoli mushrooms tomatoes and gravy.
 
There may be some foods which your nurse may have thought OK but if they are following the NHS standard idea then for many that is still too high in carbohydrates. That is why the Freshwell program was developed by a GP surgery who found it just did not work for many of their patients. Yes, I agree that looks pretty good although there could be quite a lot of carbs in the bread depending on how thick the slice. It's easy to carve a doorstep off the loaf with homemade bread. I would never manage to limit it to just one slice, especially homemade, even if it was a doorstep, so I am impressed by your discipline! It could be that you are particularly susceptible to bread, even sourdough and then having a wrap at lunch as well assuming it was a normal wrap and not a lettuce wrap. and then potatoes with the evening meal, but you are right there isn't much room to skim more carbs off, but perhaps doing some testing and changing the type of carbs in some meals might help. I find omelettes quite good for breakfast as they don't need toast to carry them or bread to soak up a runny yolk and you can vary the filling to make them interesting and I have them with a large side salad and coleslaw, to make them more filling.
