Hi there
I’m new I have not long been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes trying to get my head round it all hope this site helps…

Welcome to the forum @Bel1970

Glad you have found us 🙂

A diagnosis with diabetes can come as quite a shock, and it can all be a bit overwhelming in the beginning. Diabetes is potentially a very serious condition, but it’s also one that can usually be managed well with a few changes and adaptations - it’s something that you can learn to live well with, and it shouldn’t stop you doing things you enjoy.

Are you managing your diabetes with any medication? Or are you starting with adjustments to your diet and levels of activity?

If you’d like a good overview of diabetes, you might like to sign up for the Learning Zone (the orange tab in the main menu) which is packed full of bite-sized modules that you can work through at your own pace.

And keep asking questions here too - we have lots of friendly members all finding their own way through the diabetes maze, and building an individual toolkit of approaches and strategies that help them live better with their diabetes. There’s no ‘one size fits all’ approach - so you have to experiment to find a way that will work for you 🙂

I have spoken to my GP and she has changed me to a slow releasing one which I am waiting delivery for. I am. Weight watchers member too so that’s where I am at I just need help with food what n when I’m eating. I swim twice a week so so get some exercise.

Hi @Bel1970, welcome to the forum 🙂

As everydayupsanddowns has put so well, we're all here to help, and that it is perfectly normal to feel a bit lost at first. We are all about encouraging and helping people live well with diabetes, and being able to do the things you enjoy.

Really sorry to hear about your side effects, I hope you feel better soon on the slow release metformin. It's good to know you have fed back to you GP and that they are adjusting your medication. It's also really great to hear that you've been going swimming regularly too.

In terms of getting some support with food, you may want to take a look at our 'Eating Well' guide (you can download it as a free PDF) via this link: https://shop.diabetes.org.uk/collections/information-for-you/products/eating-well-with-diabetes

Also having a look through the food and recipes thread here on the forum is really worthwhile.

And of course, please ask any questions you may have 🙂

Some people have found groups like WW and SW works as long as you are careful with the selection of meals as many are too carb heavy for managing Type 2, they tend to focus on low fat which is not needed if Type2, it is carbohydrates that convert to glucose not fats or protein.
Have a look at this link to see how it compares as it is a low carb approach which many have found successful in both losing weight and managing to reduce their blood glucose. https://lowcarbfreshwell.co.uk/
Basing meals on meat, fish, eggs, cheese, dairy, vegetables and salads and fruit like berries with only very small portions of high carb foods like potatoes, bread, rice, pasta, breakfast cereals which are big hitters for carbs.

Hi, have you asked your group leader for the adaptations to WW for diabetes? Or if you have an online log in you may be able to get the information for yourself - they do an adapted Free Foods list for diabetes, see here - https://www.weightwatchers.com/uk/blog/health/welcome-diabetes-tailored-pointsr-plan

That is good to know as it would be a shame if there were not suitable options for people who find the group support element and that sort of regimen helpful.
