Hi and welcome

Would you like to tell us a bit about your diabetes? Things like....
How long have you been diagnosed?
Your HbA1c if you know it? (This is the blood test used to diagnose diabetes and will usually be a number in excess of 47)
Do you take any medication to help manage it and if so, what?
Have you made any diet/lifestyle changes?
How are you coping with the diagnosis? We all know it can be really overwhelming at first but it can also wear you down over time, so having the support of people in a similar situation like here on the forum can be really beneficial.

Is there anything particular that brings you to the forum..... concerns or need for advice or just as mentioned above that you feel it will be motivational to be part of a group facing the same challenges.
Feel free to ask any questions and make yourself at home, despite the Spanish Inquisition above 😉 we are a friendly lot:D

Hi I was diagnosed last March with a Hba1c of 60 .. I was prescribed Metaformin 3x fail and basically no help at all. I’ve lost almost 4 stone and my blood is now 39.
I have completely struggled with this due to the stigma around this illness.. and still am. I’m totally confused with regards to food .. what we can and can’t have. I’ve never ever been a cake/ chocolate/biscuits/ sweets/fizzy drinks eater . I’ve always worked 70 hours a week plus .. so I’m always active… but due to the erratic eating and drinking.. sometimes going hours without a drink.. I think this has contributed. I’m just learning to adapt and be disciplined.
Thank you

Wow! Many congratulations on the fantastic weight loss and HbA1c reduction.
It seems odd to read that you are confused about food when you have clearly had such fantastic success, but I guess you mean the reason why you developed diabetes in the first place and unfortunately it is a bit of a lottery. There are certainly genetic aspects to it and Professor Roy Taylor talks about a personal fat threshold which can be the triggering point. It is also possible that Covid caused a sudden increase in BG levels, if you have had the virus? There are many obese people who are not diabetic and people who have a bad diet but are thin and not diabetic but sadly there is unwarranted stigma associated with the condition and there absolutely shouldn't be. Did you experience it personally from people you had contact with or feel it was imposed upon your self conscious by the press or worse still, your medical professionals. Hopefully not the latter but unfortunately there are some old school medical professionals who very unhelpfully seem to think that people bring this upon themselves. The important thing is that you have done something extremely positive about it and I hope your story will encourage others and let them see that is is possible to change things, even when you don't have a "bad" diet to start with.

You have done amazingly well to bring down your blood glucose despite your implied not knowing what to do as far a eating. The thing now is to maintain that achievement and the important thing is to understand what foods somebody with Type 2 diabetes can safely eat.
This link may help with some explanation of managing blood glucose and maybe explain where things were going wrong with your previous diet, there are many food which would be considered healthy for somebody non diabetic but sadly are not so if Type 2 diabetic. https://lowcarbfreshwell.co.uk/

Hi thank you … I definitely could not follow a keto diet .. I do eat pasta, bread and the vegetables grown underground ( I’d rather die than give those up) but in moderation and wholemeal . I just try to be sensible and eat well and at the right times. I truly believe that the reason for my diagnosis was eating badly at the wrong times. I do have to work 7 days a week and I do not have any time to batch cook anything.. so I’m just being disciplined in that I tell my bosses I am stopping for something to eat and drink . It seems to be working and hopefully I can maintain this .
Thank you

Low carb is not the same as Keto which is generally in the region of 20g carb per day whereas low carb for most people settles between 50 and 130g per day to keep them where they need to be.
Trying a few substitutes for the high carb things you mention, squash, swede or celeriac instead of potatoes and black bean or edamame bean pasta as they are lower carb, more sauce and less pasta.
Any way you seem to be doing well with what you have been doing.

Sounds like you’ve made a great start @Buffu1 and are finding ways to make your new routine effective, and sustainable for you long-term. That can be a big piece of the puzzle!

Hope you find the more regular meals helpful. 🙂
