Welcome to the forum @Lossiebhoy75 I am glad that you have found us.

A good starting point is to visit the Learning Zone (and orange tab above or in the menu if on a phone). There is also a link to useful advice for newbies at the top of this thread. With so much to take in at the start, there will no doubt be many questions that arise. Just ask. There is plenty of experience to tap into and no questions are considered silly on here.

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis :(

Do you remember the result of your HbA1c that gave you your diagnosis? This will be a number 48mmol/mol or higher, but some members arrive on the forum with a diagnosis above 100, so don’t panic of it’s quite a bit higher than 48.

Have you been given any medication to start with? And have you had any suggestions around foods? Of the food groups it is the starches and sugars that will have the biggest impact on your blood glucose levels. Many members find that moderating their total carbohydrate intake, by cutting out sweet and sugary things, reducing portion sizes of grains, root veggies, pasta, bakery items etc, and being careful of fruits (berries are usually the kindest on BGs can be a very helpful strategy.

It can also help enormously to lose any excess weight you may be carrying, especially around your middle - a build-up of visceral fat around the organs can stop them working properly.

Adding some moderate exercise and increasing activity is also a big help, as it can substantially reduce the glucose-raising potential of meals.
