Hi Jaki, can you tell us a bit about yourself? How did you find out that you were diabetic? Are you coping ok? Do you have any questions or anything that you'd like to find out about?
Sarah

hi im 53, 5,7 and over weight. im a mother to six gorgeous kids and have 8 grandkids. I also have agoraphobia so dont tend to go out. I also suffer from depression. I found out I was diabetic when my surgery did a routine blood test. I think im coping but I havent changed my diet much, it makes me not wanting to eat. I dont know what I should be asking.

Hi Jaki, thanks for that. Sorry to hear about your struggles. I can recommend starting by signing up for the Learning Zone to find out a bit more about diabetes. There's information on there about food too - you need to keep eating to stay well.
The things that will make your blood glucose higher are the obvious things like sweets, biscuits and cakes, but also other carbohydrates, like bread, pasta and potatoes. You don't have to give any of them up, but be mindful of portion size, and do things like adding more vegetables to your meals, and reducing the amount of spuds, or swapping cornflakes/milk for an omlette. There's swaps suggested in the learning zone course also. You don't have to do everything at once, just make small changes and review how you're doing after that.
You can come back to us and ask any questions you have, there's no pressure to ask them now. It takes a bit of time to get your head round the diagnosis, give yourself time and be kind to yourself.

A simple way to change your diet to help is to alter the proportions of the foods on your plate. Reduce the carbs (carbs increase your blood sugar) and increase green veg (low carb and good for you).

Look around the forum and don’t be afraid to ask anything you want about diet or where to find things here, or just post to have a chat or a bit of a moan. Everyone is friendly and helpful here 🙂

Welcome to the forum @jaki

Sorry to hear you are having a difficult time with your diabetes, and coming to terms with your diagnosis.

It must be particularly difficult alongside your mental health conditions.

Do consider giving the Helpline a call Mon-Fri 9-6 who can chat things through with you.
