Hello guys 🙂

You all seem really lovely and helpful, just wish I was here under different circumstances 🙄

I'm 31, just been diagnosed as type 2 diabetes and I'm having a bit of a weird time trying to come to terms with it and get my head around what I need to do to keep my levels healthy. Currently trying to eat low GI foods to lose some weight and control my levels.

Hope to see you all around soon x

Hi Tam, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, it's always a bit of a shock and a lot to take in. The good news is that, with some will and determination, it can be managed well and many people find themselves happier and healthier than they were before diagnosis because of the discipline it gives them to eat healthily and get active 🙂 Sounds like you have made a good start with the low GI 🙂

Are you on any medication for the diabetes? Do you know what your levels were when you were diagnosed, and has your nurse/doctor given you any blood testing strips so you can measure your levels before and after food?

Have a look in the Useful links thread for some links to good information to start you off. The book Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker is highly recommended by many of our members, so do see if you can get yourself a copy.

Any questions you have, please ask away and there will usually be someone here who can help. Best of all, you are among friendly people with all sorts of different experiences with diabetes, so you can rant or moan away if you wish, or share your successes, of which I hope there will be many! 🙂

Welcome Tam.

Lots of support, advice etc available here, so do look round and ask away.

In particular, as you mention trying to lose weight, there's a Weight Loss Group section. As well as diet, exercise is also vital, not just to control weight, but also for blood glucose control - and fun, once you've found the rigth activity / activities for you - doesn't have to be gym: walking, cycling, gardening, active conservation etc can all be good, too, and eve nsave time money instead of some journeys by car or public transport. There's an Exercise / Sport section, too, towards the bottom of the index page.

Thank you guys 🙂

The diagnosis was a bit of a shambles tbh, and I reckon I should have been diagnosed 6 months ago but they doctors decided to retest me, and didn't ever tell me I needed another test :/. In all, I had 4 fasting blood glucose tests, I don't know the results of the first one, but the last three have shown results of 9.1, 6.9 and 7.2. I don't know what my hba1c result was, but apparently it was in the 'definitely diabetic' band, and it's from that I've had the diagnosis. I'm currently on metformin 1000mg per day, increasing to 2000mg per day from Wednesday. I do feel better since starting the met and changing my diet but I'm finding my levels are erratic. I'm going to start a food diary from tomorrow to see if I can work out my triggers etc.

Sounds like a good plan Tam, a diary can be extremely useful 🙂 Good to hear things are improving already, although a shame that you took so long to get diagnosed. Things do take a while to settle down, but it sounds like you have made a good start! 🙂

Hi Tam, welcome to the forum. You may find that keeping to the low GI foods in the right proportions will help greatly with weight loss, did with me but I had lots of problems with bread.🙂

Hi Tam a warm welcome to the forum from me

Welcome to the forums Tam0904 🙂

You have the right idea 🙂 Remember that it is the total carbohydrates in food and not just the sugars that is important.

Welcome to the forum Tam! 🙂

Why hello Tam, is this who I think? :D

(If not I apologise! lol)
