At risk of diabetes
Hi ,

I've just joined the forum.I have been diagnosed as pre diabetic and have been looking for a good diet.I have 9st to lose. The high carb high fat diet looks good but I am borderline for cholesterol so I'm not sure about the high fat part.

Should I combine low carb with low fat or low cab and high good fats?

Thanks,

The high carb high fat diet looks good
Hello and welcome to the forum. I'm already on your diet, that's why I'm doomed. :D

Yes, just do low carb, but with 'normal' good fats. That's what I'm going to try and do. Starting tomorrow.

When doctors hear that someone with low cholesterol is eating fatty foods, they usually dismiss it out of hand.
It has to be wrong.
Personally, I toss a whole pack of chicken thighs into the Tefal Actifry, and when they are done I take them out, steal the skin and cook mushrooms in the juices. Sigh.

A lot of low fat foods are high in sugar (they've got to put something in them to give them some taste) so are not a good idea for diabetics or pre-diabetics. Most people here eat low carbs and healthy fats (not necessarily high fat, just normal full fat foods) and find they lose weight, and often lower their cholesterol levels too.

Like you, I have also recently been diagnosed. Firstly with Pre-Diabetes and now it's been determined that I'm Type 2. I'm still learning about changes to diet myself but as far as I know, the best course of action is low carbs, up to 170g daily, your usual amount of protein (which won't affect blood sugar levels) and healthier fats. Look for spreads, oils etc which contain monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. Try and steer clear of saturated fats as these can raise cholesterol levels. Best of luck!

Wow - I eat a maximum of 40 gm of carbs per day - and eat only the natural fat which comes with meat, and olive oil. My cholesterol came down for the first time in years after following a cholesterol lowering diet, low fat and low calorie, but high in carbs and using sunflower oil in small quantities.

If you need to lose weight then I think low carb normal fat intake will encourage your body to breakdown and use it's stored fat. Once you reach a healthy weight, then increase your fat intake to stabilise your weight. If you eat low carb, high fat from the start you will most likely lose very little weight. Adding fat into the diet makes it enjoyable and therefore sustainable long term. Personally I am only eating natural fats from meat and veg, not synthesized fats like you find in spreads, so I eat butter and cheese and cream and full fat milk and yoghurt and nuts which contain a lot of oil and olive oil and avocados and fatty meat and oily fish etc. My total Cholesterol is 5.2 but I have a good ratio of LDL:HDL
I am no expert but I think the current scientific view is that dietary fats are unable to migrate into the blood stream, so the cholesterol that you eat does not directly transfer to the cholesterol in your blood.
Many people still worry about eating more than one egg a day because there was concern that they were high in cholesterol. I think it is widely accepted now that eggs are healthy. There is a scientific school of thought that the low fat diet which has been promoted for the past 70 years was based on incorrect research data and may in fact be why we are now seeing a diabetic epidemic.... because people ate lean meat and more carbs.... which were cheap and made the new low fat foods taste better.
Eating a high proportion of leafy green veg is also an important part of a healthy diet which is easy to overlook when you are talking low carb high fat.
