Newbie - unsure what to eat

Hi all!
I was diagnosed in Nov 2020, my diabetic nurse said I needed to lose weight then another blood test 3 months later showed by having lost over a stone it hadn’t changed my levels so I’m now on medication. I know it’s early days still but I struggle with meals and knowing what to eat, does anyone else have this problem?
 
It can seem so hard when everyone reacts differently to diets, meds, exercise. The tough bit is working out what works for you, but the advice here on this forum can guide you to your own personal method.

Keep going. I have heard that sometimes the body doesn't seem to lose weight whilst readjusting itself (whatever that means). Readjusting in a good way.

One of the biggest questions when trying to get to grips with your diabetes is often ‘what can I eat’ and while there are obvious things like cakes, biscuits, sweets and sugary drinks that you will want to cut out straight away, you might be surprised how much *all* carbohydrate affects your BG levels, including rice, pasta, potatoes, bread, pastry, grains, cereals and many fruits.

Many new members also find it can be really helpful to keep a food diary for a week or two. Be brutally honest! Note down everything you eat and drink. It can be especially helpful to estimate the amount of carbohydrate in the meals and snacks to give you an idea of which foods are the main sources of carbs in your menu.

If you would like a good overview of T2 diabetes, to add to the knowledge you’ve already picked up, members here frequently recommend Maggie Davey’s Letter and Gretchen Becker’s book T2 Diabetes, the first year, which you can work through gradually and will give you a solid starting point.
