Relationship to Diabetes
At risk of diabetes
Hi everybody & a very happy new year to all in 2025. Here's hoping this site can help in some way with my concerns.
I tried to get checked out at doctors yesterday but was told that I have to phone the medical practice at 8am each day so in order to obtain an appointment with a doctor.
So instead, I can only wait in the interim for this to hopefully get sorted. Employment does'nt help as I work 8-5 each day so it's a bit of an arrgghhh scenario trying to get a doctor on the NHS & given the fact that I have only required a doctor twice in ten years then my heart goes out to anybody who requires a doc on a regular basis.

It all started a few months ago. I've been falling asleep at home suddenly & unexpectedly for 1-4 hrs each time & I figured out recently that this occurs every time I eat a cake or chocolate or sugary things in general.
I can't be woken when this occurs by any means. It's almost as if I'm in a coma of sorts my partner insists who on occasion was stuck on her own all night with myself slumped over on a chair for hrs.
This never happens at work because when we work etc the blood/adrenaline stops that from happening.
I seem to sleep for 1-4 hrs per evening outside the bed then I'll often go to bed around 5am/6am to get one or two hrs sleep before awakening at 7am for work.
Figure this one out. My alarm 'always' gets me up for 7am after I've chosen to go to sleep but anytime I pass out or whatever it is unexpectedly; I can't be awoken by whatever means.
Then there is the increased toilet trips I've noticed recently, my skin complexion is a kind of olive yellow which is liberally is almost the same complexion & tired look a friend has & he's got type 1 diabetes.
I get the occasional pains in my lower intestine areas too I've noticed as of late but they get better with drinking more water.
There's been a few nights when I've awoken from my mini coma & my vision has been bad-bad as in why can't I see anything, it's all blurrish. Forget tv then basically, time for bed, must have been a long day at work!
I'm 46 & I have a sweet tooth. I'm not fat & am quite thin now thesw past years but athletic in build (could be work) but that doesn't explain how I've been getting away with eating a whole slab of choc each night, cakes, biscuits, the occasional energy drink at work & I could eat the whole shop's sweet & choc supply & probably still not gain any weight!
So..my strategy is to drink more water, reduce any sugar in tea/coffee, refrain from sweet snacks as much as possible etc.
I do feel a bit better since doing so but now I have to face the reality of knowing that if I do have some form of diabetes then I guess it's goodbye to the snacking for good.
In the meantime..I guess all I can do is observe, change my die t & wait for things to go back to normal so I can finally get a hold of somebody who can help whether it be one of the live chat team here after 9am on Thursday morning, a doctor or one of the many of you who uses these forms & who might know what best to do.

Thank you for reading

These particular symptoms have some of those that may be suffered by somebody who has diabetes but do sound significant enough to prioritise getting medical advice as soon as possible as you could be putting yours self in danger of long term complications if you don't get a prompt diagnosis and the appropriate treatment.
I assume you have not had any blood tests but you can go to a pharmacy and ask them to do a finger prick blood test to see what your glucose levels are and that will tell you the urgency of the situation.
Meanwhile you could cut out any sweet foods and restrict the high carb foods like potatoes, rice, pasta, bread.
It would be the periods of unconsciousness that would be very concerning.

Well, the peeing sounds like diabetes as does the blurred eyes, but not much if the rest of it.

You could buy a blood test meter and strips at large pharmacys to see if your sugars are high (like over 10 m/mol), but i'd get those symptoms checked out.

If it is diabetes its all carbs, not just sweets/ sugar. Pizza was what made me feel bad

The yellowy skin isn’t a symptom of diabetes @angelo88 It can be connected to liver problems though. To be honest, this could be anything. I think it’s wrong to assume it’s diabetes. A general check up and maybe some blood tests would be a sensible first step.

I notice you say you fall asleep for 1-4hrs in the evening on a chair, then wake and go to bed around 5am. If you do sleep on the chair for 4hrs, then wake and go to bed at 5am, then that would mean you’d fallen asleep on the chair around 1am, wouldn’t it? That’s pretty late, so maybe you’re just tired, or the disturbed night is making you tired, which then becomes a bit of a vicious circle - tired so fall asleep on chair, wake and go upstairs, sleep for another hour or two, then get up, work hard, are tired after your disturbed night, so fall asleep on chair again….and so on.
