Hi everyone

Newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes I am taking 2x500mg Metformin tablets. Have had a little chat with the Diabetic nurse been told not to eat after 7 in the evening as it will help with my weight loss 😱 but this will be hard for me as I work nights 5 days a week but I really can not see how that would help.
I have been given a BG Meter and the lowest reading I have had so far is 18.4 when I wake in the afternoon but it is more likely to be in the 23/25 region.

Hi Greatbadger (great name!) welcome to the forum 🙂 Try not to worry too much about your early readings, it will take a little while for the metformin to start making a difference, and also for you to discover what food you tolerate well, and what you should avoid. And I wouldn't pay too much attention to the nurses's advice as it's clear she has overlooked one major flaw in it! 🙄

It's great that you have a meter and strips as this is the best tool you could have for finding out what works best for you and what doesn't. I would highly recommend reading Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter, and getting a copy of Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker - these will give you a very good grounding in understanding diabetes and the best approaches to controlling it. I would also recommend having a look at Test,Review, Adjust by Alan S - a guide to testing efficiently 🙂 Also, look at The GL Diet for Dummies as a good introduction to how to eat healthily and reduce the impact of food on your blood sugar levels.

Please ask any questions you may have, there are loads of friendly, experienced people here who have been where you are now and will be happy to offer you the benefit of their knowledge. No question is considered 'silly', so if you're wondering or wrorrying, ask! 🙂

thanks

Thank you for the welcome name tag is an old scout leader name Beavers picked it because of my grey hair lol. It was quite scary getting the diagnosis and worrying about eating but I will take on board your advice and do a lot of reading this weekend. 🙂

Welcome to the forum Greatbadger 🙂

Hi Greatbadger, welcome. I would take the advice of the nurse re: mealtimes with a pinch of salt for two reasons.

(1) that might possibly be useful if you had a daytime job, and
(2) the evidence about mealtimes affecting weight is thin at best.

Here's a link to an article on NHS Choices debunking the theory: http://www.nhs.uk/news/2013/02Febru...-loss-is-linked-to-mealtimes-unsupported.aspx.

Good luck with your weight loss, for some of us it really works. Have a look through Weight Loss threads.

Greatbadger hi and a warm welcome to the forum, pleased I dont have your DN as i may have had to give her a piece of my mind in my case sometimes im not i from work till after 7, and some days i dont get time to eat until my evening meal so what does she suggest I do,get fed from the paramedic as im being driven to a and e cause ive fainted 🙄

Good luck with your weight loss if you need any encouragement or help we have a great weight loss section on the forum

Welcome to the forum! 🙂

Here's to getting those readings down! Towards that end, just ask away (no question is considered silly).

Good luck,

Andy 🙂
