Hello,

Just saying hi, was diagnosed 18 months or so ago and still go through long periods of denial thinking that eating anything won't matter, however I stopped drinking alcohol a couple of weeks ago and checked my sugar levels and was a bit shocked to see 22.5 on the meter. I've started back on the believing trail and have cut down an awful lot on fizzy drink but it still seems like the level is dropping too slowly. Today its averaging around 16 and that's even with medication.

I take, Metformin (morning an evening),Gigazide (evening) and Simvastatin (at night)

In such circumstances should I be worried enough to go to doctors again (I am booked in for Diabetic check-up next week)

Hi Mark, welcome to the forum 🙂 The number you are seeing will be largely dependent on when you take them in relation to your meals, plus of course, what you have consumed. By fizzy drink, do you mean the full sugar variety? If so, then I would suggest you need to cut it out completely as this is probably one of the worst things for your blood sugar levels. Are you testing before eating and then one or two hours afterwards to see what the difference is? This is the only way you will be able to tell how that particular meal affects you e.g. if you see a rise from 12 to 20 then that is not good, but a rise from 12 to 15 after eating would be acceptable - you would just need to work on getting that pre-meal level down to something good.

If you have your check up next week then I wouldn't panic, but just go along and be prepared to be honest. Don't look back on your past mistakes and complacency/denial - look forward to a better, healthier you! We will be here to help with any questions you may have, so ask away 🙂

Welcome to the forum Mark 🙂

If you like fizzy drinks, there are lots of zero and nil sugar varieties that don't really taste all that bad.

It's the carbohydrates in your food that puts your levels up - not just sugars. So you have to watch bread, potatoes, rice, etc as well.

Welcome to the forum Mark x 🙂

welcome mark - I echo what has already been said - I am noticing a tremendous drop in my scores by cutting down on refined carbs like bread, white rice etc and no sugar drinks. keep in touch

Welcome to the forum 🙂

Hi all,

Thanks for the nice welcoem 🙂 As for the fizzy drinks - it was diet, my favourite is Sugar free Irn Bru!

Anyway through eating carefully over the last few days I managed to get my blood sugar level down to around 10-12 and have discovered something else which is making it spike. This morning I had started at a level close to 12 had a normal low carb breakfast but when I took a reading afterwards it was 19. I know it wasn't what I had so checked my "other" medication and found that it had a side effect of causing higher sugar levels.

I suffer depressive symptoms and have been on Venlafaxine for about three years, now am wondering why the doctors haven't taken me off it or changed it or if all ant-depressants do this. Will look later, have to do take Daughter back to Uni now. *sad face*

Thanks again

Mark

Hi Mark and a warm welcome to the forum 🙂

I would advise you to check with your GP on the venlafaxin as I know it can have an effect when used long term, always good to see if you can change over to maybe citalopram or something similar and always be aware of side affects if you do change. Get them also to check out your blood pressure.

Hi Mark, perhaps you would like to visit your Control Panel and change yourself to Type 2, as your meds don't line up with a Type 1. Have you had an HBA1C blood test recently as your GP will probably use these to change your diabetes meds. I wouldn't have thought that fizzy drinks (as long as they are diet ones) would affect your BG readings. What was your low carb breakfast? an increase of 7 is a lot, unless your liver is fighting you.
