Hi,
I would like to say hello to everyone and say I just posted a couple of restaurant choices. Myself and family enjoy these places as I can eat things on the menu.
History about me?
I was originally diagnosed as type 2 when I registered at a new G.P. after moving house. They are a good practice, my other G.P. was dreadful in fact I could say neglectful. September of 2011 I will never forget having to go to hospital for observation of my 26.4 blood sugar level! Following on from that the metformin didn't work so I went onto Humalog mix 25 insulin.
I am at the point now where I am recovering from surgery, having had part of my pancreas, my whole spleen and gallbladder removed and bowel operated on. The pancreatitus bout they said left a cyst. It was actually a slow growing tumour that had spread and luckily they caught it before it turned cancerous. This was the cause of my diabetes and pancreatitus. What a way to become diabetic!
I would love to hear how others were diagnosed.
TTFN.

Hi, welcome to the forum 🙂 Goodness, what a way to become diabetic! :( Very sorry to hear this, I hope that things are improving for you now that you have had the ops and are getting treatment for your blood sugar levels.

What insulin regime are you on? We have some members here who also became diabetic due to loss of their pancreas, so hopefully they will be around to share their knowledge and experiences with you. Please do ask any questions you may have - nothing is considered 'silly'! 🙂

In answer to your question, I was diagnosed aged 49 after becoming extrmely ill a week before I was due to run a marathon. I thought it was just a bad stomach bug, but it turned out I was Type 1 with a blood sugar of 37 at diagnosis 😱 Needless to say, I didn't get to run that marathon!

Hi and welcome, glad your on the mend and also welcome to the T1 club lol
Its a great site with lots of help when you need it.
I was a typical, went to the doctors thinking i had a urine infection, he mis diagnosed me as type 2, gave me some tablets and sent me home, within a week i was in hospital and stuck on insulin and told that i was type 1.
Being a massive whimp with needles, it took me 1/2 hour just to learn how to inject myself.

Half an hour? Gosh that was quick !

Although to be fair to me being at least as slow as that, I had to learn to draw up the insulin into the syringe and flick the air bubbles out and all that jazz too.

Felt awful for weeks, tired, didn't want to eat except chocolate, palpitations, raging thirst, desperate for the loo etc - classic. After peeing myself on the way home from work (managed to hold it till I got off the bus Thank God, but I was seen - terribly embarrassing) I went to the docs .....

Hospital the next day and stayed there for 10 days, armfuls of blood night and morning, learning how to boil up pee ..... eyes wouldn't focus properly for about a month after that and I was bored brainless as I couldn't read, watch telly, knit, sew ..... so was off work, on my own all day with no money to do anything or go anywhere .....

Did a lot of that crying thing .....

I was just going to say my house has never been as clean since, but that's a fib cos once upon a time much later, I could afford a cleaner and she was An Absolute Treasure ! LOL

Hi Northener,
I am now injecting three times a day, before the op it was twice a day. Due to see the consultant on Tuesday good job. Hypos are not as obvious as they were and have had a few this last week. My main concern is going on a pump but not sure what the criteria is for that!! Do you still run? Afraid my running days are over if they ever existed! I am also asthmatic and have just been diagnosed with arthritis of the spine. Don't think there is much else to throw at me.
Hope this finds you well.

Thanks Megga,
I was lucky I was used to needles and have worked with diabetic kids at school ( teaching assistant). My husband hates needles and never looks when I am injecting. Why do you thing docs get the diagnosis wrong? Hope this finds you well.

Hi trophywnech,
I know all about crying there has been a lot in this house for months! I do like chocolate too but find it a little sweet now, never thought I would ever say that. I was lucky to be put on the insulin pen having to draw up the insulin would have been maddening. My husband's cousin started off that way and I think he still uses that method 20 odd years down the line.
Hope you are well.

We have a couple of members, pottersusan and martindt1606, who became diabetic due to loss of their pancreas and who are now both pumping! Have a read of their experiences:
