Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi everyone. I am a lady aged 59 years and have had type 1 diabetes since I was 14 - that's 45 years!!!! Can't believe it. It really is just a part of my life - I can't actually remember what life was like before!
I have been married for 34 years and have one son aged 28 years. They both look out for me all of the time. My hypo awareness symptoms have got less and less which is tricky at times, but overall I manage fine and have never let my diabetes limit what I do. It is a HUGE part of my life and I just thought that I may be able to help other people as I have so many years experience!
I'll check the forum now and again and hopefully get a chance to talk to others.
Bye for now.

Welcome to the group Margy, I'm sure a T1 will be along shortly with some advice.

Welcome to the forum, Margy. Have you discussed your diminishing hypo awareness with your diabetes team? Assuming you have a diabetes team, of course. The usual recommendation is to run levels higher than usual for a while to try to reset awareness.

Hi Margy and welcome to the forum.

Hello and welcome from a T2

I think they're now recommending avoidance of hypos rather than just running higher, although I appreciate the two approaches might not be that different in practice.

I think most of us probably do - I for one need to know what my levels are doing, especially if I am about to eat.

I don't really like checking it wen I'm out because theres people around- what should i do?

I think for me it has become such a habit that I don't even think about it. Other people rarely seem to notice if I'm honest. In a restaurant I Test on my lap below table level so hardly anyone would see what I'm doing anyway!
