Hello everyone, I'm a newbie to the online system but have been Diabetic for about 10 years

Hi and welcome.

Hope the years with the big D have not treated you badly. How do you manage it? Are you on any medication?
What brings you to the forum at this time? ie Is there anything we can help you with?
Feel free to ask any questions you have or share your own experiences and particularly successes if you have some. :D

Hi
I have fortunately been OK managing my diabetes up to now, always had good support for the Diabetic Nurse.
I've just moved to Lightwater in Surrey so have a new surgery, not yet met the Diabetic Nurse but will make that appointment as soon as I can

I was actuall trying to do some admin on here as I received a mailing from Diabetes UK which went to my old address, so want to update address but cannot see how to do so, can anyone point me in the right direction please

Good to hear you are doing well with your Diabetes and hope the new GP surgery proves supportive and efficient. I will tag a member of DUK staff @Josh DUK and hopefully he can explain how to update them with your new address.

Barbara
Thank you for reaching out to me as a newbie to the Forum.
I'm managing to keep my levels down now by taking 1 x 25 mg Alogliptin & 1x 40gm Glicazide in the morning with 38 units of 100ml Injection in the evenings. It took a while to get to this stage but seems to be working well now

I initially took Metformin but Oh Boy was that fun, turns out I had an intolerance to it nearly finished up in hospital - big learning curve!

Now I've found the forums I look forward to chatting with others

Yes, Metformin can have quite devastating side effects for some people. Sorry to hear it put you through the mill!
Those are quite a few different medications and will be interesting to see if your nurse at the new surgery reviews and adjusts them.
Which insulin is it that you use? I am guessing it is a basal (long acting) insulin since you just take it once a day, but can you tell us the name of it? Have you been on insulin long? Have you tried the Freestyle Libre sensor Free trial as that might give you some useful insight into what your levels are doing between finger pricks. It can be a real eye opener!

It is a basel, I'm using Tresiba U100 so have had all the fun of the re-filled pens being in short supply. I've now switched to Novapen 6 with the cartridges, I'm getting on OK with that system so will probably stay with it. I've been on Insulin for about 18 months now, my levels fell quite quickly and have remained static ever since, apart from when I have been 'naughty'!

The diabetic nurse at my last surgery was going to put me forward for trialing the Freestyle Libre but sadly that's now now going to happen unless my new surgery go forward with it

You can apply for a free 14 day trial of the Freestyle Libre 2 directly through Abbott Laboratories' Freestyle Libre website. It would get you 2 weeks worth of data and nothing to lose in trying it for free. The only qualifiers for the free trial are that you are diabetic, you haven't used the system before and you have a compatible smart phone and the list is quite extensive. Many of us self funded the Libre before we got it on prescription and it is worth every penny in my opinion. We have some Type 2s still self funding but almost all Type 1s now get it on prescription. It is not cheap by any means. I used Christmas and birthday money and it was the best present I ever had. Try it yourself for free and see what you think. It doesn't have to be done through your nurse, you can just apply for it yourself through the website.

Hope you are able to build a positive relationship with your new nurse @Pauldae - and great to hear that you’ve been able to get insulin working well for you.

For changing address, please can you send an email to helpline@diabetes.org.uk with your full name, previous address, new address and your supporter number. Then one of the supporter care advisers should be able to locate your record and update your details.

Thanks again Barbara I have applied and one is being sent out to me
Great. You might want to read the thread liked below about the Limitations of CGM to have a better understanding of interpreting the results.... particularly any dubious looking results like night time lows which can be due to lying on the sensor and causing a compression low, but there is lots of useful insight in that thread...
https://forum.diabetes.org.uk/boards/threads/cgm-limitations-and-precautions.108188/

Do let us know how you get on and if you have any problems Abbott are usually very good about replacing them.... even the free trial ones. Taking time with the skin prep and application is one of the keys to success I think. Skin needs to be clean, grease free and thoroughly dry before application. I tend to apply mine on an evening after a shower and I blast my arm with my hair drier for a few seconds after towel drying just to be sure it is really dry.. Also, it is worth applying it a day before you activate it as sometimes the tissue has a slight localized reaction to a foreign object being fired into it and can be a little less reliable during that period so we find you get more reliable results from day 1 if you give it 24 hours to bed in and settle after application before starting it up.

Thank you will follow your advice on application as that sounds sensible. Will check out the link s well

Hope you get on well with it, and find the information helpful and informative @Pauldae 🙂
