Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi all, I'm a type 1 and have been for just over 12 years (diagnosed when I was 15). I'm on lantus and novorapid but hopefully getting a pump in october (fingers crossed). Although I understand my condition and carb counting pretty well, and always try hard to control it, I have phases of quite wild blood sugars, so the general hope is that it will help stabilize them somewhat...

Also a bit about me, I'm a singer/songwriter, although at the moment I'm a full-time mum - I have a 4 year old and 2 year old twins so even when my db is behaving i'm still always absolutely shattered! 😉 But generally I do find tiredness a problem especially when my levels wake me up in the night as they often do :(

Welcome Lemele. Sounds like you have a lot on your plate. Are you going too high or too low at night?

Welcome to the forum lemele. 🙂

I think when you get your pump (and after a few weeks to establish the optimal basal settings) you will be able to achieve much better nights. My son used to be on Lantus and would need to start the night on 16+mmol to avoid a hypo by morning - terrible! But he's been on the pump for several years now, and many nights he will be all in the 5's and 6's 🙂. Being a growing child, however, I can't rely on that, and he still has very unpredictable nights, but at least with the pump I have the tool to tackle whatever D throws at us!

Tiredness gets me down too (I get up to check my son's levels every night so am permanently shattered :(), but it's not surprising you are tired with your three little ones to look after, even without the D in the mix! Are they early wakers? My son would be up and about by 5am at that age 😱 and then you're on the go all day until they're tucked up in bed!

Thanks guys.

I'm generally going too high at night, but (if i havent woken up and corrected in the night) then i often feel really strange in the morning (hypo-like) which makes me wonder if I sometimes go low then bounce, or something similar (happens to my bro a lot - he is also t1).

As I mentioned I'm on lantus and novorapid Northerner, and my pre-bed levels are usually 7-10 with some higher. i've done a bit of basal testing but not for a while. The general consensus is that my lantus dose is correct...

The main problem at the moment (coz it always goes in phases/seasons, anyone else notice that?!) is that unless I get it absolutely perfect at tea time (which doesn't happen that often for reasons), my levels seem to go screwy. If I do anything AT ALL after 7pm everything screws up. So i generally test before bed, and if i try to correct my level (with or without food, or with lots of food and a small dose of insulin, or tiny bite of food with lots of insulin, or with just insulin (small, medium or large doses), or just do nothing at all) i still end up high at some point before the morning. If my level is good then i must not eat anything at all at any point after tea even if i'm starving, oh except for random times when it decides to make me go low! Either way, i'll feel sick, wobbly or just uncomfortable before bed whatever is happening...

Redkite my brother had something similar to your son's night time problems a year or so ago, although him going on lantus/novorapid (he was on mixtard before) seems to have helped. Growing + D = stupid! My kids wake about 6:30-45 which is about passable but lately i've just been getting more and more tired every day and i'm not even sure why - just seems to happen. Tonight i actually sobbed for about an hour (not something i generally do!!) due to extreme tiredness/headache/feeling generally awful! I suffer with chronic depression too so find it so hard to deal with feeling terrible physically as well 😡

Anyway. Any suggestions welcome!

That's not right is it?

Have you had your thyroid function tested recently - cos bone tiredness is one of the symptoms of hypothyroid.

And yes - the weather does affect your insulin requirements, on top of your monthly cycle, exercise and all the things the diabetes fairy* gets up to while we're not looking.

(* Northie has been known to dress up as her when running half marathons. I'm sure he'll find you a photo to cheer you up!)

Regrettably, having a pump doesn't stop this, but at least basal doses do become infinitely adjustable.

That used to happen to me as well. Going high & low in the night. Liver or something fighting the demonds off 🙄 Welcome

Hello and welcome lemele 🙂

I was having problems when on MDI using Lantus. I used to dread going to sleep as I usually went hypo then hyper most nights.

Since using a pump and only having to use Humalog insulin my night time levels have been much more stable and I feel a lot better for it.

I hope starting to use a pump will give you more stability and that it will help you to feel less worn out.

I've no idea what's 'right' any more trophywench... everything about my body just seems to go to pot these days. Maybe coz I'm always tired, so when things are harder (illness, stress, whatever) my body just can't cope? I don't know.

I have had thyroid tested recently, it was showing lowish as is seemingly common for me. My consultant thought I might want to visit docs and poss get some tablets but my new pump consultant poo-poohed that when I mentioned it. So.. not sure what to do about that. I need to visit docs anyway for various things so I will mention it when i go, as well as my feet which have been swollen lately which is unusual for me, doubt they'll say much though. The usual.

I feel like I should have a bit more faith in my body but then it proves to me how hopeless it is - can't help thinking i'm sometimes a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy! 😱
