Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hiya all, names Pete
42yrs young, been type 2 for 6yrs, currently on metformin 3 x 300mg twice a day, novarapid after meals 60 units brealfast 70 units dinner and 80 units in the evening, also on background insulin levimir 124 am and 120 pm. also sitagliptin 100mg daily. asprin
also have a few conditions caused by the diabetes, angina, for which i take antenolol 100mg, and of course the spray.
neuropathy which is in both upper and lower limbs for this i take amitripylin 50mg and gabepentin 300mg x 3 daily , also on preindaprol and amlodapine for blood pressure.

given the amount of insulin i inject 5 times a day, my sugar levels are still running quite High, fasting is usually around 19 and rises to hi by the evening.

my levels which i have checked every 3 months are around 12.5

at a recent diabetic appointment with my consultant, he said that the insulin im on is doing nothing, and is going to change it for Humilin R , And i will only have to inject 2-3 times a day.
anyone had any problems with this type of insulin?

PS Sorry for any spelling mistake

Hi Pete, welcome to the forum 🙂 Very sorry to hear of the problems you are having with your levels, it must be very frustrating to be seeing highs like that when you are taking all those meds and insulin. I don't personally have any experience with the type of insulin that has been recommended for you, but hopefully some other members will have experiences they can share.

Has your doctor considered Victoza or Byetta? I know of at least one of our members who has been able to reduce levemir by taking it in conjunction with Victoza, so this may be a possibility for you. Have you tried a low carbohydrate diet so your body has less to deal with?

Whatever is decided, I hope that you can get your levels down. Please let us know how things go on 🙂

Hi Pete and a warm welcome to the forum from me, you had made a good choice in joining this place it is a life line to so many of us, I look forward to seeing you posting and wish you luck sorting your levels

Thanks for the welcome.

My diabetes is overseen by a diabetic nurse at my local hospital, and the consultant at the diabetic centre, my nurse rings ever 2 days to collect my blood levels and to oversee my diet control, which at the minute is going great, but still no drop in sugar levels.

They have never suggest i try the drugs you mentioned, but this will be the 3rd change in insulin in the last few months.
will be great if the new insulin makes any difference, would love to get a good nights sleep without having to get up at least 3 times a night for the bathroom :(

welcome Mr Mountain sir, cant help with the insulin probs you're having but hope you get your levels down

Welcome to the forums manmountain 🙂

Welocome to the forum 🙂

Hi Pete. welcome. 🙂

Do your other problems make exercising difficult ?

Some of our members have found that an increase in exercise, as far as is possible, can help lower insulin resistance and make the medication more effective.

Hi and welcome, lots if very knowledgeable people here

Welcome to the forum Pete!

Hi Pete!

Errrrr, only bearing in mind your handle, how much Mountain is there in the Man? - and if a lot, what attempts are there in converting it to a hill?

Hiya ManMountain

Welcome to the forums 🙂

Sounds like you have insulin resistance to match your username :(

Noticed you used the word 'diet control'. What sort of approach do you follow re: carbs?

Hi Manmountain and welcome to the forums. That's a lot of meds you are on there! It might be an idea to ask your DSN about the possibility of trying Byetta or Victoza. These are meds that you inject like insulin but they work in a different way. I've been on Byetta almost 3 months and it's working fine. My levels are now 90% in range and no side effects. Some people lose weight through this, unfortunitely I haven't. Might be worth looking into. XXXXX

Thanks for all the welcome's 🙂

manmountain, was a nickname given to me many years ago by a old guy i was doing some work for, and its kind of stuck ever since 😉

currently 19st but im 6ft 5" so i carry it well 😛
I find it hard to exercise due to the nuropathy and the angina, but that dosent mean to say i do non, in between caring for myself im my wifes full time carer, and a dad of 5 daughters, so something alway to do to keep me moving..

My diabetic nurse has had me on a diet for about a year and i have managed to lose over a stone, despite my gp saying that due to the high doses of insulin i would find it hard to lose any weight, so quite pleased with the way my diets going.
I get told so many times by the consultant that the insulin is just sitting in the scar tissue in my injection sites and basicly not doing its job, despite me changing injection sites so many times , so if thats the case why keep changing the insulin.

sometimes i feel like im fighting a loosing battle, but i hope that sometime soon there will be light at the end of the tunnel.😱

All the best
Pete
