Hi just become a member. I’ve been type 2 for 10yrs felt like I was on my own till I spotted this group. So much stuff on the internet I’m hoping for some clarity with this group. I’m 67 and my levels have been pretty good. However I have a diabetic clinic 30th Jan and desperately trying to get back into routine after Christmas. Too many mince pies I’m afraid. I’m looking for a more healthy diet. Considering the Mediterranean diet. Is anyone on here using it ?

Welcome to the forum @Lincoln Den

Glad you’ve found the forum made you feel less isolated.

We’ve had a few people who have found the Mediterranean style menu effective and suited them

Diabetes UK have a meal plan here shock might help:

There is sometimes a little confusion and discussion about what exactly does and doesn’t constitute a Mediterranean Diet. So it’s an approach (like any meal plans with diabetes) that it’s helpful to adjust and adapt to suit you within the overall style.

Good luck with it, and let us know how you get on 🙂

Hello @Lincoln Den and welcome to the forum. It's always good to get fresh insights from new members that have been living with diabetes for several years. There are plenty of knowledgeable helpful people here.
I tend to follow a Mediterranean style diet in the summer because I enjoy it and it's not too high carb if I keep the bread portions small.
In the winter I prefer more soups and stews although I had a nice frittata for lunch a few days ago.

Welcome to the forum
It is easy for things to creep or people can become less tolerant of the carbs they are having but also ideas do change over time as to what can be more effective at reducing blood glucose and the rather old fashioned and standard NHS approach of carbs with every meal is not always doing people any favours unless on particular medication which does need people to be careful not to go too low with carb for any one meal.
However if you are just dietary managed or diet and metformin then a low carb regime can be very successful. It is suggested that carb intake should be no more than 130g per day so trimming a bit off your carb intake may help if it is more than that. This link may give you some ideas for modifying your diet as there are various menu plans or you can just follow the principal and do your own thing, There is good explanation as well. https://lowcarbfreshwell.com/1

Hi and welcome, I do like a good salad and whilst I would not say that I follow a med diet, I do like Greek style salads and have them quite frequently. Eg: lettuce, cucumber, bell peppers, onion, olives, feta cheese and toms. I quite often drizzle with apple cidar vinegar.
Everyone's different but general guidance for type 2's is the low carb style diet, nb: all carbs not just sugars, so try to reduce as much as possible, potato, rice, pasta, pastry, sweets, crisps, cakes, biscuits, chocolate, etc.
Check out the learning zone on here, and the eatfreshwell website and the sugarfreelondoner website.
Cheers

I do a low carb Mediterranean diet, but now & again I use recipes from Michael Mosley's books

Over a period of 12 to 15 months my weight went down from 95kg to 82kg
My target is to get just below 80kg and I hope to achieve that during the next few weeks

I stopped taking a statin owing to the aching & side effects, just using diet & exercise, and my DSN is surprised and impressed that my cholesterol is <5
The only fats I use are olive oil, butter, and naturally occurring in meat & fish

Also my blood pressure is good at around 120/55, and the DSN has suggested that I could try reducing the dose of Lisinopril to a tablet every other day, which I've just started
I have my own BP monitor so I'll see how that goes

My HbA1C is low, though I have to admit that it was higher at my latest review, probably due to a bit of complacency on my part
Now that Christmas is over I am back on the straight & narrow.

Find the Med Diet & Low Carb Med Diet on YouTube & DUK's Website; or just modify Med Diet recipes that contain carbs
