Hi All,

Late March I has a routine blood pressure test and it was high so I was put on meds for that and when I saw the doctor she wanted blood tests. I started to diet and put more efforts to exercise more.

On April 15 my mmol/mol was 52 and a 2nd test to verify was 49 on 25th April. They diagnosed me with T2 and put me on metformin. I’ve continued with the diet changes and have used recipies from the Fast 800 book and that’s been been skipping breakfast so that I fast. Been avoiding carbs like bread.

So far I’ve lost 2.5 stone. I’ve just had another blood test and my mmol/mol is 36 which I am very pleased with and blood pressure was 113/69.

I am 57. With the new levels in a normal range should I be having a discussion with the diabetes nurse about coming off the metformin meds and continuing with the lifestyle changes?

Thanks for any advice.
David

Well done on the reduction in HbA1C your strategy has paid off. Many who are only just in the diabetic zone would be trying diet before meds as diet is just as, if not more important. Choosing a way that you can maintain is a good plan. Your blood pressure may be on the low side but may be normal for you but just be careful if you are on blood pressure meds as some people find they need to reduce the dose.
Usually you need 2 HbA1C results in the normal range to reduce or come off the metformin though some GP like people to stay on it even then.

What dose of metformin did they put you on ?

Thanks for the replies. I’ll check to see if they want to reduce the blood pressure meds. I am on 2 x 500mg tablets per day.

Hi @anok4u2 and welcome to the forum!

You've done really well for yourself and I agree with others - speak to your GP about it, they might want to keep you on a bit longer, but regardless, the changes you're making are important and need to be long-lasting. Discuss them, your diet, lifestyle and everything else so you could make an informed decision with your doctor.

When mine came down to 36 the medics halved the dose to 500mg. Then they just stopped it altogether this year as hba1c was still in the 30s. (They wanted to stop it last year, but I said I might as well keep taking it if it was helping. Then they just stopped it and wanted to see if I was in remission)

Well done on your terrific progress so far @anok4u2

Given the horrible constipation I am having with semaglutide I will be seeing my diabetes nurse in the near future to see if metformin , which did wonders for my sugar levels , is worth trying again
