Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi I am Elaine and found out on thursday that i had type 2 diabetes after i did a gtt and my first fasting test was 7.3 then i drank the lucozade, 2 hrs later the reading was 14.5!!! although for the last year my levels have ranged from 6 right up to 8.9 as i had some liver problems last year and was drinking heavily (dont drink now at all), doc has told me that for the first 3 months they are going to try me with diet and exercise (am overweight and so doc really wants me to lose weight), if that dont work then we will try tablets, my mum also has type 2 and is taking metformin, when i was pregnant with my son i did have gestational diabetes and had to inject myself with insulin so this is not really new to me although it has still come as a shock to me and i have mixed emotions at the moment, feel like i will never be able to eat my favourite foods anymore and am worrying about getting all the diabetes related illnesses etc..
Sorry for the ramble

Welcome Elaine!

Sorry for the ramble
Never any need to apologise for a ramble Elaine! As you can see on this site there is so much advise from the great members on this forum. It is very overwhelming being newly diagnosed. The book Diabetes for dummies has been highly recommended - I have not read it myself and cannot vouch for it - but it seems a lot of people have found it a good starting point. Your diet may have to change slightly ? but it will be for the better and most people that have taken diabetes in hand are feeling better than they have for a long time. Try your best with the diet and exercise route ? if you can avoid meds I think it is for the better. Really no food should be avoided, but as with anyone, not just diabetics, just do the 'bad stuff' in moderation. We should all be doing that, diabeteic or not! We are here all the time if you have any further questions or need to vent.🙂
