Relationship to Diabetes
At risk of diabetes
Hi to all
I was diagnosed being pre diabetic (only borderline though)12 months ago. Since then I have been careful as to what I eat. I have always been slim but since being more careful with what I eat and cutting out sugar I have lost weight to the point that I look shocking. I have tried various different things such as eating smaller meals and more often. Eating more eggs, cheese and generally food which diabetics are recommended to eat to gain weight. I have noticed little change in my weight during this time. I have come across a powder supplement which is of interest to me but I am unsure if it is suitable for someone who is pre diabetic. I have listed below the ingredients and wonder if anyone can advise if it would be suitable

Thanks in advance

Nutritional Information Per 100g Per Serving Energy 1506 kJ/388 kcal 1506 kJ/388 kcal Fat 6.2 g 6.2 g of which saturates 1.3 g 1.3 g Carbohydrates 50 g 50 g of which sugars 2.6 g 2.6 g Fibre 3.8 g 3.8 g Protein 31.4 g 31.4 g Salt 0.4 g 0.4 g

Unfortunately nobody can advise whether its suitable or not

Ideally as pre diabetic or diabetic you watch your carbohydrate intake as its carbohydrates we struggle to tolerate and the only way to tell what types of carbohydrate and how much of them we can tolerate as individuals is to test BG levels before consuming and then again 2 hours after consuming hoping to see no more than a 2-3mmol rise in BG

So I'm afraid the only way to see if it is suitable for you is to do what I've explained
xx

Do you eat normal amounts of fat?

By the way, I may add I ate eggs and cheese to gain weight and wasn't advised not to so I'm not sure where the diabetics aren't advised to part has come from xx

Only you have used the word 'aren't' in this thread Kaylz - nobody else has. The OP said 'things that diabetics ARE recommended to eat more of to gain weight'

my bad, that's what happens when you get no sleep xx

Thanks Kaylz for the info.
As you can perhaps guess I am finding the whole issue of what to eat and what not to eat a pain.
Am I right in thinking that from a diabetes point of view it’s the carbs which are sugars to look out for ,and not just carbs in general?

No, you have to take total carbohydrate into account, all carbohydrates turn to glucose in the body, the of which sugars to us is an indicator of how quickly it would spike our BG, should you wish to change your diet to try and stop becoming diabetic then you'd be looking at reducing your carbohydrate intake so things like cereals, porridge, bread, pasta, rice, potatoes etc aren't great for a diabetic as well as your sweet things like cakes, biscuits etc xx

Kaylz is right, you can forget the sugars bit and only look at the total carbohydrate.

Coming back to your original question @mcrguy. Your "powder" contains 50 g of carbohydrate per 100 g. I aim to get below 100g of carbohydrate in a day so for me, unless I took it in very small amounts, could easily account for a large proportion of my target daily intake. So if I used it, I would have to cut carbohydrates from some other source.

I make this point because I try and think of my carbohydrate intake in the round, rather than looking at individual items and decide whether they are good for bad for me. Also being on the slim side myself I make sure that I am getting sufficient calories in to keep my weight stable. My route has been to eliminate some things entirely, essentially anything that is mostly made from flour and then to limit the quantities of grains and carby veg and replacing the missing calories with meat, fish, eggs and the like. My blood glucose is where it should be as is my BMI.

Anyway I am a bit sceptical of these magic nutritional powders. Mostly, they are a way of selling at a premium price stuff that would be otherwise thrown away or fed to animals. You can get all you need from a diet balanced for your requirements without the need for over promoted supplements.

Plus because the carbs - 50g - 'of which sugars 50g' means however great or small amount of it you consume, it will hit your bloodstream in the form of glucose 'faster than a speeding bullet'.

That is not the best plan for anyone with diabetes .....

Unfortunately I eat all the eggs and cheese I feel like, and don't gain weight. However, I am sure that the problem called diabetes type two is not just one thing but several possibilities, or a number of variables ganging up on us. What is OK for me might not work for you, (or be what you want in the first place) and vice versa.
As it is twelve months since your diagnosis you should be due a consultation with your Dr, who hopefully can suggest an option - though hopefully not 'eat more carbs'.

Gutted because I thought the powder would be in the short term a fix to help me put the weight on.
I would like to thank you all though for contributing to my post.
Best Regards
