Hi

I've been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes a couple of months ago and i'm still spinning around with all the info I'm meant to absorb! I also have Reactive Hypoglycemia too :( Anyone else have the same 2 probs?

Kaz

Hi Kaz, welcome to the forum 🙂 There is a huge amount of information to try and take in, much of it conflicting, so it's hard to know where to start. Most of our members would recommend getting a copy of Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker, and also reading Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter. These should get you off to a very good start and help clarify the issues 🙂

We also have members with reactive hypoglycaemia, so hopefully if you have any questions regarding it (or anything that is confusing, worrying or confounding you!) please ask away! No question is considered 'silly' and we all learn from each other's experiences 🙂

Are you on any medication, and have you been prescribed blood testing strips so that you can evalueate how different foods affect your blood glucose levels?

Hi Kaz, welcome to the forum 🙂

i've been troubled by Reactive Hypoglycemia for nearly 25 yrs and I've had no medical support. I have been following the principles of low GI diet on and off and now have the type 2 diagnosis doctors r telling me this is rare to have both. I've had some NHS diabetes education sessions (final one next tues) but they seem to say about eating tiny portions of carbs but i need more carbs to keep my sugar levels up.

The other day i had an Oat biscuit at 7am with cup of tea, 9.30 2 toast with spread (100% stoneground wholemeal) 11.30 Banana 13.15 BS was 3.7 and I having hypo. so had 50g dry weight wild mushroom cous cous, poached trout, lots salad i was still shaking so had muller yoghurt and cup of tea 2 hrs after my BS is 6.1 then at 4pm i having another hypo so i had a special K bar then 6pm i had potato and spinach bake with turkey breast.

Its obvious this is not right - any ideas/suggests welcomed.

Hi - I have a problem with hypos even though a type 2 on Metformin only!
They haven't been officially diagnosed as reactive hypos.

At first I was told they couldn't be happening but after a week in hospital with lots of tests many hypos were witnessed, recorded and confirmed so no argument now.

What they did see was that I have a mass of insulin that builds up in my system - I think it was 15 times the norm, and then it floods and I end up with hypos and a massive weight gain - up to 12lb in a day!

I am also very active - tennis and running at the moment and also have hypos a few times after exercise, which I think is reactive.

So maybe I am a little like you.

How have you been told to control it? I tend to have cereal bars which seems to be helping followed by lucozade if go low and a sandwich.

I am not sure if any of this helps you but please feel free to pm or ask on here if you want to know more.🙂

Hi Kaz, welcome to the forum. The two problems you mention sound very difficult to manage. I hope you get some ideas here.
