Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1.5 LADA
Hi all. I have just been diagnosed with LADA at the age of 47 following autoantibodies testing. I’m currently taking 9 units of toujeo and was on 2g of Metformin which was stopped on Monday once the bloods came back.
My HBA1C in 2020 was 40 and then about 6 weeks ago it had gone to 72 and my blood sugars had gone up to 27 but luckily no DKA.
The diabetic nurses at my surgery have been amazing and kept on close contact and I’m due to see diabetic nurse specialist on Tuesday.
I am having issues with my stomach which is gurgling as soon as I eat and for hours after and also through the night at times and yesterday I felt nauseous all day and couldn’t eat other than a little bit of soup.
I think I have struggled emotionally in the
Last couple of days also and am worried about returning to work soon. I wonder if this is having an impact on my stomach also.

Sounds like you have had some good support, which is really important at first.
Re stomach, i think its probably an emotional thing...i know i felt dreadful for a couple of weeks after diagnosis, though is may not be helped by your body readjusting to lower blood sugar levels. I also took a couple of weeks off work
But it does get easier.
Especially when you get a cgm, like libre 2

Yes I think I have been very lucky compared to some !! Your right I think going back to work will be made a lot easier one I get a libre. I think over the last few days I have been overwhelmed and I’m overthinking everything

Welcome to the forum @Loumac from another late starter (53 at diagnosis)

It is a lot to take on board at the start and it is good to read that you have support around you, especially in the early stages as you and your body get used to your new ’normal’. The best analogy I heard was that dealing with this is like learning to drive. It all seems complicated at the start but then a lot of it becomes automatic.

I took a week off work at the start and then a phased return as I settled in to managing my diabetes. It takes a bit of time to get insulin doses right, and at the start you are likely to have some beta cells, which make insulin, still working so they join in now and then. This is known as The Honeymoon Period.

I suspect that the stomach issues could be due to the emotional trauma, which is totally understandable. Talk to your nurse about it. Things definitely get easier, but there is a lot to get your head round at the start. There is a wealth of experience to tap into on here, so ask any questions that arise. Nothing is considered silly on here. Just ask.

Welcome to the forum @Loumac

Good to hear you are getting good support from your surgery 🙂

It can be a big diagnosis to come to terms with, so it's perfectly understandable for you to be experiencing some emotional upheaval - however if this is affecting your daily life, your appetite, and upsetting your stomach it would be worth mentioning at your appointment to see if there's any help you can get with the mental/emotional side of things.

Hope things settle a little for you over the weekend. Let us know how things go next week 🙂
