Hello,

I just wanted to say hi and introduce myself and give a bit of background info. I'm a suspected type 2 diabectic but am waiting for my GP to confirm this.

Last Saturday me and my boyfriend went and had a fasting glucose test done at Tesco. While he had a reading of 5.8 mine was 10.7 :( The Tesco man said that this was probable type 2 diabetes and that I should see my GP. Unfortuantely, due to busy doctors and an upcoming holiday I can't get appointment until Mid October!

Although it's not 100% I'm going with the assumption I am diabetic so I can start doing something about it! Rather that than sit around for 3 weeks and risk anything getting worse! So trying to be pro active I've increased my exercise and cut out my nemisis- chocolate in order to try and lose a bit of weight. I've never been huge but I've always been 'big boned' shall we say and need to lose 2 stone to be within my ideal BMI.

While I wait to see the doctor I've hired out a few library books and been researching a bit on the net to try and get my head around it all. That's how I found this wonderful site! Also Boots have a blood glucose monitor on sale for ?5 so I've bought that and tested for the last 2 mornings - 8.7 and then 6.9. I'm keeping track of them and keeping a food diary to show the doctor.

I know I might be jumping the gun by doing all this as I haven't even been diagniosed yet but it's been the wake up call I needed and I want to improve my health. I just wish I didn't have to wait to see the doc so I could know for sure 🙄

Anyhow, sorry for the rambling on!

Waves hello at everyone 🙂

Hi daisymoo, welcome to the forum 🙂 I think you are doing the right thing to assume that your diagnosis will be confirmed as it will also give you an opportunity to formulate any questions you may have at your appointment - you are of course free to run anything past us first!

The main thing to remember is that diabetes is all about carbohydrate. Carbs come in different guises, such as sugar, flour, potatoes, pasta, rice, noodles, bread and so on. Some of these will have a much bigger impact on your blood sugar levels than others, so it's important to limit the potentially fast-hitting carbs and also to consider portion sizes so you are not overloading your system with too much carb. A useful guide to the relative speed at which carbs convert to blood sugar is the GI or GL (Glycaemic Index/Load) so I would recommend getting hold of a copy of a book or two about this. There are some recommendations in our Useful links thread.

Exercise is good, so plenty of that will really help! If you are going away on holiday I hope it is going to be an active one! 🙂

Anything you need to know, please ask, there is usually someone who knows the answer 🙂

Hi Daisymoo. Welcome 🙂

I agree with Northerner. Big thumbs up to your attitude and the steps you're taking.

You can never be too health conscious whatever your GP tells you next month.🙂

Hi Daisymoo, I'm a newbie so wouldn't advise, but just say hello and good luck.

Hi Daisymoo
This is another newbie saying hi! Don't forget to join our weight loss group - I did - it gives you a real boost to see it all mounting up as a group total!
Sounds like you've got a great approach and attitude already!

Hello Daisy, welcome to the forum.

You are doing the right thing and can take some heart from the reasonable morning readings that you've been getting. That augurs well for the future I think especially if you keep up the exercise and keep an eye on the diet.

Good luck (and enjoy your holiday)!

Andy 🙂

Hi Daisymoo

Welcome to the forum. You have come to the right place for support and advice. I was recently diagnosed with prediabetes following a fasting bg of 6.4 and an oral glucose tolerance test which showed that my bg was high but not quite into diabetic levels. A massive wake up call! This was at the end of May and since then I have lost over 2 stones in weight, joined a gym and switched to a low carb/low fat/high gi diet. I feel so much better! I bought a meter as it's good to see what I can eat that keeps my bg within good limits. You have received some good advice so far - I bought the Gretchen Becker book and it answers pretty much everything you need to know. Good luck with your appt in Oct, enjoy your holiday and try not to worry too much. You're among great friends here! Katiex
