Evening folks,

I’m new to the forum but been diagnosed type 1 for a number of years !

Deliberately excluded offers of help and advice for a number of years, stubborn man syndrome o_Oo_O, but as things have become more complicated I need to get some advice from those “in the know”

I’ve had an ulcer on my foot that needed a month in plaster, nightmare in its own right, it’s been suggested that sketchers, trainers for non work situations but in the work environment Dr Martens might be good solution.

Has anyone been in that situation or can offer some advice ?

Many thanks in advance

Hello @Oslo65 and welcome 🙂

Sorry to hear you've been in a cast for a foot ulcer. I hope it's healed now.

I would ask the team that put you in a cast- presumably podiatry or orthopaedics? -for a referral to the orthotics dept where they can make custom insoles and/or custom made shoes to protect the vulnerable areas on your foot from pressure. Take along the shoes you think are best suited for work/ home and they'll advise you on the best way to protect your foot. Was the ulcer from pressure/infection?

I've been in casts for a long time but did once get into a pair of shoes that were made by the orthotics team . They make a mold of your feet and make insoles and/or shoes from it so the risk of a repeat ulcer is minimised.

Hi Flower,

Thanks for the response, are you still in cast ? I hope not.

Yes due to pressure, I’ve been wearing leather soled shoes for years and it’s finally caught up with me!

They are referring me into the orthotics team but may take time to get things sorted, as is always the way I guess. In the mean time trainers and sketchers were suggested for but for work it is not always practical hence the thoughts around Dr Martens as they are not have cushioned sole etc

Am very worried as to where it may lead and and want to be as proactive as I can be

Kind regards

Welcome @Oslo65, sorry to hear about your foot problems.

After spinal surgery I have had to be more careful about bits of my foot where I have no sensation.
I had orthotics made, and then sorted out my shoes into those that could take these and those that could not.

I recently bought some shoes from Sketchers which take the orthotics, so perhaps you could find some that have their own insoles at present but will take orthotics in the future. I was advised thatlace us were my best bet as they reduce movement on the orthotic.

As others have said, the team that put you in plaster will be the best peopeto advise you.

Hi SB2015
Sorry to hear of your surgery and hope your better?

I had heard of sketchers as been told you can get them with memory foam but not thought of the insole aspect.

Will chase that up

Thanks

Oslo

Hi @Oslo65 just catching up with forum after a short vacation, welcome to the forum.🙂 Feet what a problem for some of us? Doc Martens are an excellent choice for work although they do everyday shoes/boots too. I had negative results from my Podiatrist about sketchers, he said although they initially are a good choice but the insole doesn't last long enough for a person with feet problems who use them as a daily source of foot wear. I agree with @Flower and I see you have been referred to the Orthotics team, well done. Be a little bit more patient before spending big bucks on foot wear, hope it all works out for you, keep us up to date.

Hi Ted,
Hope you had a good vacation?
Thanks for the advice of]n Doc Martens, I used to have the boots with yellow laces many, many years ago
I guess I was very concerned when the ulcer appeared and took some treating, goes to show how easy it is to create panic!

Kind regards
