I have just joined and I am prediabetic. I am a Coeliac with other problems. Looking forward to chatting with everyone.

I have been prediabetic for a long time, but recently my HbA1C for my yearly blood tests taken on 22 April 2022 has risen to 44. I have a GP telephone appointment later in May. I have joined the NHS prevention scheme and hope to reduce my HbA1C by diet. I do not have any questions at this time.

Maybe if you have a look around the forum for ideas on the way people handle reducing their blood glucose levels. With an HbA1C of 44mmol/mol you probably don't have too much work to do and just reducing the portion size of some of the higher carb foods you may be having. That should fit in reasonably well with Coeliac as you will be avoiding many of the things people find hard to give up anyway. Obviously whatever regime you choose to follow has to fit in with your other conditions but a few substitutions for lower carb foods is something to look at.

A diagnosis of prediabetes is really a bit of a nudge to make a few changes to improve your health.

Sorry to hear you are having to balance coeliac and other health concerns with being at risk of diabetes.

Hope the diabetes prevention programme is helpful and supportive.

Are you aware of any changes that might have been behind your rise in HbA1c - like a period of illness or stress? Or has it come out of the blue?

Have you experimented with moderating your total carbohydrate intake since you have been told your were at increased risk of diabetes? (this isn’t always something that is mentioned)

I have been a diagnosed Coeliac for almost forty years and have been managing that and my other problems okay so I have not encountered any problems.

I have yet to start the NHS Prevention Programme but will let folks know how helpful it is.

I am not aware of any changes since my last blood tests were done a year ago except thinking about it I have recently been put on blood pressure tablets; Amlodipine and Perindopril maybe there is a connection.

My HbA1C was released to me via “My Chart”, an app where my doctor and Addenbrookes Hospital give details of appointments and tests. I have not yet spoken to my doctor since seeing my results, but the last time it was high I was given a diet sheet which suggested lots of carbs. I am very aware that the low carb way of eating is the way forward for diabetes so I have been cutting down on my favourite carbs.

My weight is constant and it has been the same for years, but it is a little high for my height so I am hoping that by losing some weight it will be enough to lower my HbA1C. Susan

Unfortunately there are now many gluten-free products on the market for coeliacs, but I do try avoid biscuits and cakes, but carbs are definitely my downfall! I have already started reducing my portions and hope that by losing a little weight my HbA1C will also lower.

I thought you had mistakenly said unfortunately but then realised that you meant you could get gluten free things that are still not too good for blood glucose levels.
