Hi I'm mum to Ben who was diagnosed Type 1 last November, just about getting used to everything now, got carb counting course this week.

Hi kirstine a warm welcome to the forum, we have a lovely helpful group of parents on the board and a parent section with loads of good advice and guidance . Good luck to Ben on the course x

Hi Kirstine, welcome to the forum 🙂

How old is your son and what regime is he on for insulin at the moment?

Hi Kirstine, welcome to the forum 🙂 I imagine the past few months have been quite a learning curve for you all! Good to hear that you are getting a carb counting course, hopefully that will help clarify things and give you more flexibility 🙂

First day of course today, think I get the idea of it all, will get the hang of it eventually. Bit concerned as it means quite an increase in novorapid doses, will see what happens

Think it's great you have got the chance to access this carb counting course, often parents don't and rely on (in our case) books etc and infrequent dietitian contact.

Let us know how you get on with the changes in Ben's novorapid, hope all goes well x

Hi Kirstine
Know what you mean about the increase in Novorapid. At one point in William's honeymoon he was on 1:75 ratio 😱 had to have carb overload for just one unit of insulin!! Now if he ate 75g of carbs he'd need about 12 units which at first seemed like a frighteningly big hit ....
Welcome to the board.

Hi

My son was diagnosed in November (aged 8). We don't have carb counting courses here but we have carb counted from the beginning with assistance from a brilliant diabetic care team. Soon you will know carb values for everything and its surprising how many restaurants etc.. have the information available on websites. We rely mainly on a book and there's an iphone app as well which is brilliant. Don't worry you'll soon get the hang of it, I look at it like weightwatchers but with carbs not points !

Good Luck

:D
