Hi all. I joined this site 2 years ago after my son's initial diagnosis and then came off and now back on.
I am hoping to interact with other parents locally (south london) who have kids/ teens who are dealing with type 1.
I also thought it may be nice for my son to meet others that he can relate with.

A diagnosis at any age can be scary,

I’m 15, How old’s your son @Jal ?

How are you both coping? It can be a struggle for both your son and for you, as the parent

We are coping fairly well after 2 years. It was really tough when he was diagnosed as he was due to finish year 6 so it was very overwhelming. We struggled alot with the injections- it literally broke my heart, but now I self fund the I port advance for him whilst we are waiting for a pump. So he's happy that he no longer feels the pen needles. He also is doing great at school, no issues and loves sports which helps immensely. I am just trying to get him to connect with 1 or 2 people who he can relate with aside from his friends.

That’s great that you’re both coping well. The time you have to wait for pump funding after it’s been decided it’s a good idea varies from clinic to clinic.

Are there any other people at his school with Type 1?

Same in my situation, I wouldn’t mind chatting to him if he wants to chat to another diabetic near his age?

That would be good for him.

I think that would be good for him. I'll speak to him and let you know. Thank you for offering.

I’m going to tag-in @Bronco Billy @Thebearcametoo @Sally71 and @stephknits who are parents of T1 youngsters who may be able to help.

Have you looked into Diabetes UK events like the ‘family weekender’?

You can find out more and register interest here

Diabetes UK supports a number of local groups throughout the country. Some are specifically for families, you can find the group nearest you at https://volunteer.diabetes.org.uk/teams/ Some organise events while others have regular meetings. Fingers crossed there is one near you.
