Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi Everyone ,

I was diagnosed about 8 months ago with type 2 diabetes and since then i have managed to lose about 32lb on my goal to reverse it.

i am currently suffering with a chest infection (AGAIN) and find it difficult to keep my levels in the healthy range because i find even a cup of tea sends them to 13/14 .

i am going to read as much as possible but was wondering if the chest infections i keep getting are directly related to diabetes? they usually start as cold from my 4yr daughter and progress for me to my chest.

Newbie would appreciate any help and tips thanks in advance.

Illness does affect blood levels so I would not stress to much at the moment. Are you on steroids aswell ? As they affect levels too.

i was put on steroids during my last chest infections for 7 days and it was amazing how quickly i felt better but i just had covid vaccine 7 days ago and apparently if i take steroids before i reach 3 week period i could lower the immune response from the jab

I was not aware of that , some have been reporting the Covid vaccine affecting levels too.
Many things can affect levels.

Sorry to hear how tough you are finding things @kiz1266

It seems like it is the ‘other things’ which are playing havoc with your BG levels at the moment. Steroids have a particular reputation for pushing BG skywards, as does having an illness or infection.

You should probably be a bit more careful in reducing your portions of carbohydrates in the meantime (all carbs, not just sugary or sweet things). All carbs you eat will be converted to glucose and will push your BG upwards, particularly if your body is dealing with other stuff at the same time.

Did your diagnosis come on suddenly? And does diabetes run in your family? Did you experience any unintended weight loss when you were diagnosed?

Thanks for reply, yes diabetes runs in the family but i am determined to lose the weight and try and reverse mine, because i know the affects of diabetes on your general health. Yes doctor advised me i would see a rise in blood sugar levels while on the steroids but said the course of treatment is only a week and that i just needed to try manage as best i can for the week. i didn't have any weight loss if anything i put weight on before diagnosis .

Hello and welcome to the forum @kiz1266 🙂

Are you having milk in your tea? Maybe it's that sending you high after a cuppa?

Thanks for confirming. I was just checking, because a diagnosis out of the blue in adults, which then gives stubbornly high BG after a short while can sometimes benefit from a few extra checks to make sure that the classification of type is correct.

Hope your BGs settle down soon. Maybe share an idea of the sorts of things you are eating for members to offer BG friendly swaps and switches?
