Yes. They do completely different things.
If you want an insight into how they work, search for “NovoRapid profile” and “Lantus profile”. This will give you a couple of graphs showing how long the different insulins are active for and when they are most active.

When i used these, I would inject my daily Lantus with my evening meal asi was more likely to remember it.
