Just to introduce myself. Newly diagnosed two weeks ago fasting level 12. Desperate side effects with 2 x 500mg metformin. Had to stop taking them twice now. Disgusting drug couldn't stray from the loo!! Desperate so stopped taking them. Going to ask for slow release cant live like this. Looked at this site and others, low carb seems to be the way to go so trying that. Bought a meter not tested yet going to take the weekend to let my bowels recover. Going back to the nurse Thursday, she is a practice nurse not a diabetic nurse they don't seem to have one of those so no real advice just read the leaflets. No faith in the NHS at the best of times so it seems this is a do it yourself illness with help from all you experienced diabetics.
Started a bit of exercise got the exercise bike out of mothballs and I am doing 10 minutes a day all i can manage at the moment. I am slightly overweight about a stone, and suppose the low carbs will take that away, I am looking forward to wearing a size smaller! Nice to meet you all.

Hi Sharon, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, and the problems you have been experiencing with the metformin - I hope that you get on much better with the slow-release version.

How did you come to be diagnosed? It sounds like you have researched things well (needs must when you're not getting much help from the 'professionals' 🙄), and I am glad you have found us! Have a look in our 'Useful Links' thread for some good introductory material, particularly A good place to start is by reading Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter, and Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker - a 'must have' according to many of our Type 2 members 🙂

Please ask any questions you may have and feel free to join in with anything that takes your interest - everyone is really friendly and helpful, and I hope you will gain a lot from being a member of our community 🙂

Hi Sharon and a warm welcome to the forum, I wish you luck with losing the weight

Hello Sharon, welcome to the forum. Low carbs was the way I went and no regrets, got the results I needed. Good luck with yours.🙂

Hi Sharon. Welcome to the forum and congratulations on making such a good, positive start. Sorry to hear about the Metformin problems and hope you sort them out very soon. Katie

Hi Sharon and welcome to the forums. Metformin can be hard to tolerate some Drs / DSNs suggest starting on a smaller dose - you get used to that and build up, the same principal applies to teh slow release.

Hope you find the forums useful

Welcome to the forum Sharon.

I'd say you're on the right track re: the weight loss. That did wonders for me and I hope the same applies to you too. I lost over four stone and was able to stay off the medication completely. My last HbA1c was 42 (or 6.0% in the old money), but that was after a little bout of illness. My lowest a few months before was 5.7%.

As for low carb, that's pretty much going to be determined by your day to day control. I was lucky in that I can tolerate fairly high levels of carb without too much problem (e.g. over 200g per day). But that won't necessarily be the same for you. However, as you lose the weight you may find that you can relax your carb restriction a bit.

Good luck!

Andy 🙂

Thanks

Thanks for the welcome. I was diagnosed simply from a urine sample for a bladder infection. Then had to have a fasting blood test it was 12 so there you go I am now a diabetic. I did try the other forum DiabetesUK I found it a bit daunting although they did give some really good advice, a lot of people extremely dedicated to low carbs. This seems a little more laid back, more my kind of thing. I have bought two cookbooks now a low GI and a Low Carbs so think I will just about survive on 100 carbs a day. Can't do everything at once though so I will keep my eye on fats but not get into a fug over them. I love my chocolate but I am taking to a couple of squares of 80% cocoa chocolate once in a while and I am beginning to like it! Thank heavens I can have a glass of wine with my dinner (just the one). I am just beginning to calm down and realise I can still eat. Feeling a lot better today so will get the test meter out tomorrow and start with that. Eat a bit and test a bit to see what is good for me over the next two weeks or so. I will keep looking at the forums, thanks to you all, you seem a good bunch🙂
