Hi Everyone
Been diagnosed as being Type 2 for three years and just had my Gall Bladder removed in open surgery (not keyhole).

I'm taking Metformin and Glycazade.

I decided that this year was the year I plan on dealing with my diabetes and general health SENSIBLY rather than stick my head in the sand.

On the 4th of January, I had my gall bladder removed. Originally it was supposed to be keyhole but due to complications, they had to revert to open surgery leaving me with a lovely long scar under my rib cage.

I know from my experience of small injuries and bugs, my recovery speed has dropped dramatically from pre-diabetic times.

I know the normal recovery period for this op is around six weeks but I'm just wondering how this will convert to diabetic recovery?

Cheers

Hi Cullers, welcome to the forum 🙂 If you can keep your blood sugar levels good and stable then you may recover in more or less the normally expected timescale. We do have a few members here who have had gall bladders removed, but I think the more recent ones have been via keyhole.

Hope you recover well, and quickly 🙂

Hello and welcome to the forum🙂
Sorry I can't tell you how long it will take you to recover from the surgery.
I parted company with my gallbladder before diabetes diagnosis, via keyhole surgery.

Hope you are feeling a little better.

My mum went through the same as you. Down to have her gall bladder out via keyhole but in theatre unable to so she had open surgery.

I don't know how you will heal up afterwards time wise but I needed 2 ops for early breast cancer 2 years ago (diagnosed with T2 at the pre-op tests!!!), anyway as BS was pretty good as Haic was 8.9 on diagnosis they think they diagnosed me at the start of diabetes (it is very strong in my family as no signs not particularly overweight - only a couple of pounds), I healed up just the same as anyone else. First op only off work for a week, second 1 I had 2 weeks off as they said it would take longer to heal, not sure if this was because of T2 or just that second op in same place as they went in at same spot rather than give me 2 scars.

The only word of caution I would advise is to be careful on the infection front, so if you feel hot at all or not well, say wound looks red and inflammed(apart from op recovery) get it checked out as you are probably a little more at risk of infection than someone who is not diabetic.

Take it easy & I wish you well in your recovery.

Lynne

Isn't it odd that sugar (usually honey) in a wound dressing aids healing by killing bacteria, but when sloshing around in the blood it slows healing.
