Relationship to Diabetes

My father and his brothers, and mother were all Diabetes Type 1 and 2. Some were late developers following heart condition.

I did the test on here and am at a high risk, I have put weight on due to early menopause and find it hard to shift it all around my middle, I am conscious of my diet, due to Lactose, Gluten free diet, and have bowel disorder so watch what I eat as it will affect my IBS.

I got a test recently for Diabetes as I have been getting blurred vision recently, the test came back as Fasting Impaired HypoGlycemia, which they said was early stages of diabetes and I need to loose weight and review my diet, as I will have full diabetes within 6-12 months.

Can anyone give further information on the above, and what I can do to prevent me getting this, and if I do get it how to manage it.?

thanks

Hi JellyBaby5, welcome to the forum 🙂 We have quite a few members who have been in your situation, and hopefully with the right knowledge and application you can make the necessary changes to your diet and activity levels to regain good management of your blood sugar levels.

I would suggest that you treat your situation as though you have been diagnosed with diabetes, not just at risk of it. The approach you need to take is the same as someone who has been diagnosed but is able to tackle it by a combination of diet, exercise and weight-loss. To this end, I would suggest reading the Type 2 links in our Useful links thread. Particularly recommended are Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter, and the book Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker.

Do you have a blood glucose meter so you can test your levels at home? This is a great help in understanding how your body reacts to and tolerates different foods. I would suggest following the principles of the low GI/GL diet (Glycaemic Index/Glycaemic Load) in order to select foods which will release their energy slowly and steadily (a good introduction is The GL Diet for Dummies).

The blurry eyesight should improve as you begin to gain better control of your blood sugar levels - it may take a few weeks, but don't buy any new glasses to compensate because they will quickly become useless.

Please ask any questions you may have - there is always someone who can help and no question is considered 'silly'! 🙂

welcome to the forum have a good look around we have a number of members on Diet and exercise who i am sure will come in soon to help you out and remember no question is regarded silly here ...🙂
