Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi Everyone. I’m new to all this, although not to type 2 diabetes. I was diagnosed in 2016 through a routine blood test. I had no symptoms, so had no idea anything was wrong. My HBA1C at that time was 48, so just on the cusp as it were, but unfortunately it has now gone up to 53. At first I was diet controlled, but am now on Canagliflozin 300mg, and Sitagliptin 25mg having been unable to tolerate metformin. i do my own testing, and I know my readings are quite high, so am not looking forward to my annual check on October. I am trying my best to keep to low carb, but I know I fail sometimes. I’m 78, not overweight (although I was at first by about 2 stones) . So I’m not happy with myself. I’m sorry this is a long rant, but I hope I can keep well with your support.

Welcome to the forum
That is quite a bit of mediation when your HbA1C is actually not all that high and there are some suggestions that the threshold for diagnosis for those over 65 years should be more lenient anyway.
Why do you find low carb difficult. If you fine a regime which is enjoyable then it can just become a new way of eating. I found following the principal in this link very easy and is now my new normal way of eating. https://lowcarbfreshwell.com/

Hi. Thanks for your reply. I realise my HBA1C is not that high, but since then, last October, my finger prick readings have been much higher than I would like, I.e mostly between 12 and 15, so obviously I need to try to get that much lower. I think I am just a little fed up with the whole “what can I eat” saga. Sorry, I know many people are much worse than me, so apologies for moaning. I just need to get back into the regime, as for a long while I was doing well. I am hoping that by joining this forum, it will keep me focused.

Hi @MaggieMay,

I can't offer much wisdom on the process of T2 control and what you can eat, nor much wisdom on getting back into a regime. Just to say "Welcome to the Forum", there's plenty of experience here on just about everything and between us we usually succeed in lightening each other's burden just with dialogue in conjunction with more than the odd digression! Somewhere and somehow that does seem to help us, if not keep fully focused, at least retain a sense of perspective on what is truly important. Moral support does seem to do wonders.

Plenty to read and entertain yourself with on the Forum and of course in the Learning Zone.

Hi folks. Thanks for your replies. It’s good to be able to contact with people in the same boat, and I’m sure I shall benefit from all you good folk in the future.

Well done on loosing 2 stone. If your blood sugars are between 12 and 15 it may be worth doing something befores oct...blood suagars over about 10 make me feel manky and would not want to have to deal with that fot a couple of months.
Any idea why you think bs have gone up?

i think it might be a bit of carb creep, and also maybe stress as I’m a carer for my husband. This is only a guess. But it’s affecting my sleep, and I get a very dry mouth. I’m really going to have to be more careful in the future. I think this site will help me I’m sure.

Welcome to the forum Maggie, this forum has vast experience in all areas of diabetes and control, I'm sure you are going to find it very useful, it was a great help during my darkest days, welcome!

Welcome to the forum @MaggieMay

Sorry to hear your levels have been nudging upwards :(

Have you ever tried making a food diary? It sounds like you are doing really well with low carb, but keeping a brutally honest note of everything you eat and drink for a week or so (including weighing ingredients / portions, and squinting at the fine print on packaging) can give you heaps of information about the distribution of carbs in your menu, and which of them are kinda empty and unsatisfying (therefore easier to drop). It can also highlight which meals are your ‘big hitters’ which can help when looking for swaps and tweaks.

You may well have done this already, of course - but sometimes it can help when looking for a bit of a reset. Several T2s here have a notional “total carbs per day” target - they’ll eat any variety of carbs up to that limit, trying to choose wisely and spread them through the day. The ‘right’ number differs widely from person to person, but 130g a day is often the starting point (though some find they go quite a bit lower than that).

Good luck, and let us know how you get on. 🙂
