At risk of diabetes
Hi,
I'm new here so not quite sure how this works but here goes. (first time on a forum). I have recently been told I am prediabetic (42 mmol) and don't really have much knowledge on what's good to eat/foods to avoid. I have started changing my eating habits & at the moment am following Slimming World diet plan as my daughter is on it. I have also started walking every day as I've read this helps. I have also enrolled on a NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme which I start next week. Any advice is welcomed. Also would be interested in talking to someone regularly for support & exchange conversations, who is on a similar journey to me.
Thanks,
Kim.

The walking should help a lot.
When first diagnosed I was really feeling old having been pressured to eating low fat high carb foods as they are 'so healthy' - I burnt the diet sheets and in a few months felt so much better and the amount of walking I did increased a lot. It really is beneficial.
I did exercise on a trampoline too. It is low impact and my knees were not in the best of condition as I had become very overweight. I lost weight without trying - did not even realise as I had become very despondent about it and did not weigh myself - still don't but I see my waistline reducing every few months, which is good as I was almost spherical at diagnosis.

Thank you for your reply. I find the walking challenging at the moment as I am so overweight and the weather doesn't help either, but I will continue to do it. I want to increase the distance slowly as I haven't done much exercise for years so don't want to overdo things straight away. Atm I do the same route which takes me about 15-20 minutes a day. How much do they recommend do you know? Nevertheless I will work at my own pace to start with. I also walk early after breakfast before it gets too hot.

About 4 years ago wife was in same position as you, told she was prediabetic but was overweight at time which didn't help, she joined local Slimming World group & went on to lose 5 stone, she is no longer prediabetic as all bloods since have been normal.

So keep up with walking & enjoy SW, you will get there.

Welcome to the forum @southernerbred

Sorry to hear you’ve just tickled into the range of HbA1c readings that put you at risk of developing diabetes. Hopefully as you are at the lower edge of the ‘at risk’ spectrum, the changes you are planning should have a positive impact and reduce your risk of going on to develop diabetes in the future.

Hope you find Slimming World effective and supportive, and find the Diabetes Prevention Programme helpful.

Starting slowly and increasing gradually is a good plan with the exercise too.

Feel free to keep us posted. Some forum members have started threads which act as a sort of diary, eg for their weightloss endeavours, so feel free to use the forum as a sounding board and source of support if you’d like. 🙂
