Hi Newbie here
I had been receiving treatment with steroids for my anaemia for about 5 weeks and more or less overnight experienced the classic symptoms of dry mouth, craving thirst and frequently passing urine, ignored it for a bit too long with the result that I ended up in A&E with blood sugars through the roof. Medics blamed the steroids for pushing over the edge. Followed was a week in hospital with the result that I am now facing the fact I have type 2 and having to inject with insulin twice a day which has come as a shock, but feel positive I can manage this. Pleased to join this forum to receive any advice I may need. Thankyou

Welcome to the forum @Baz G

I have split your post into a thread if it’s own so that it doesn’t get lost in the other newcomer’s introduction thread.

Sorry to hear that your steroids have left you with a little extra present :(

Steroids certainly have a well-earned reputation for causing BG chaos unfortunately, and sometimes that can mean that the body succumbs to diabetes.

Anaemia is an interesting one in the context of diabetes too- as it can affect the reliability of the standard monitoring measure, called HbA1c (which involves changes to red blood cells). Sometimes an alternative measure called fructosamine is used instead as that is not affected where the red blood cell count is low.

How is the steroid treatment going? How long are you expecting the course of steroids to last?

Hope your BG responds well to insulin, settles if you are able to come off the steroids at some point.
