Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi I'm T2 and hating it. Also have other illnesses. Enjoying looking through all the info and peoples experiences. Thanks for accepting me.

Hello, I am also a newbie too and I'm finding it hard to accept that I now have to face my sugar addiction straight in the eye and do something about it! A year ago I lost two stones with Slimming World and felt great but was struggling with the cost of it every week and stopped, thinking I could do it on my own. Since then I have piled the weight back on plus another stone, so I have gone from bad to worse! Before cancer I never had a problem with weight but since all the drugs my weight just piled on. I am determined to do something about it now though. I just have to work out what plan to follow. Definately cut out sugar for sure and low on fat, salt and keep to complex carbs.

Hi guys and welcome 🙂

@Vivi I don't know how much you know about diet and it affecting diabetes but it doesn't really matter what type of carbs you eat they all turn to glucose in the body so many at risk or Type 2's decide they either need to cut them out or drastically reduce their intake of things like cereal, porridge, bread, potatoes, pasta, rice etc even if it is wholemeal/whole wheat variety also eating fat doesn't actually make you gain weight so unless there's another issue for you needing to avoid fat then I wouldn't, lower fat options tend to have more carbs in comparison to full fat versions

@Tara33 if there is anything you think the members may be able to help with then please do feel free to ask anything, there is a lot of knowledge and experience on the forum 🙂
xx

Hi and welcome to you both. As Kaylz says carbs turn to sugar so that is what we need to reduce so things like potatoes, pasta, rice and bread plus obvious sugars and even fruit needs to be reduced a bit. I have a book called Carbs and Cals which show varying portion sizes of loads of foods and what carbs and calories are in them. I don’t bother looking at the calories just the carbs, the same in packaging, just look at the total carbs. Diabetes affects everyone differently, what one can tolerate another can’t, eg I can have a small amount of rice or potato but bread and pasta really don’t like me and raise my bg levels considerably.
Have a good look around the site and then let us know if you have any questions we can help you with. If you happen to know your HbA1c that would be helpful then we will know where you are on the diabetes scale and be able to tailor our advice accordingly.
Good luck to you both and hope to see you posting soon. Sue x

Yes welcome to this great forum, a good choice joining. 🙂

I will add that it is very easy to go into denial of this Diabetes thing, or even over react and go to far, as maybe I did, but try not to, it is possible to get things under control and I would suggest to add to the above posts that getting a blood glucose tester was very useful and does not cost that much from Amazon. Everyone reacts differently to different foods and it is good to know what affects you the worst, makes the decisions easier. Or so I found anyway... 🙂

This monitor is popular, cheap and it works: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Codefree-G...=blood+glucose+monitor&qid=1577968284&sr=8-10
I do not think there is a cheaper one. 🙂

Don't fear (traditional) fats - but be cautious about those high Omega 6 Seed Oils euphemistically called 'vegetable Oil'.
I put this in another thread today, but just in case you didn't see it, here it is again:

I had my 3x Coronary Bypass a couple of years before being diagnosed with Type 2. After the CVD problems I doubled down on my already high Carb 'way of eating' having been assured that this was the best 'heart healthy' dietary advice. Note I never dieted as such since I was never overweight.

I realised my mistake when after diagnosis (and being told the same garbage about eating lots of whole grains and low fat). I did a little research on Type 2 for myself. Since then I have reversed my way of eating to Low Carb and Higher (traditional) Fats.

This together with using a Blood Glucose meter (again against doctor's advice) has enabled me to reverse my T2D - such that at that next HbA1C in late August (4 months) I was/am now in the 'pre-diabetic range' and have lost 23lbs of body fat that I didn't realise I needed to lose (I was/am a TOFI).

Welcome to the forum Tara from a fellow T2.

Hello Tara and Vivi and welcome to the forum.
It is very hard to come to terms with living with diabetes, but as you will see from the replies you have already received there is a great deal of knowledge and experience here to help you find the solution that is right for you. Many of us find that a low-carb eating plan helps, and if you want more detail on how another lady coped with this then take a look at Maggie Davey's letter.
Please stay on line with us and let us know how it goes, and ask about anything that you are concerned about, as there is a lot to get used to.

I feel so much better now, over three years of low carb eating - dinner tonight is stir fry and roast chcken - I have lost weight without trying, more energy, slimmer, feeling younger and being more active - and normal blood glucose.

Hi
My son lost 2 st with slimming world then put it back on in weeks, then diagnosed T2 ! In 4 months of low carb, hardly any alcohol, more active and low carb high fat 4 stone melted away, diabetes in remission, like @Drummer he has more energy and looks years younger... pasta and pizza and ready diet meals did him no good at all, cook everything from scratch and food is delicious so we all eat this way most of time... can bake with almond flour (just made lovely Xmas log and low carb trifle both nice).. I learnt everything from people on here they have been a godsend and certainly wouldn’t be in position we are without their help and advice x

Hello @Tara33

Welcome to the forum 🙂

Hi both and welcome. The others have said it all really so I will just add that this is the best ‘diet’ i have ever been on where 4 stone just disappeared with little effort, my angina stabilised (no pain in about 9 months!!). I eat well for someone who is lazy in the kitchen o_O and its easy to stick to once you know what foods work for you, added incentive is monitoring those blood glucose readings......no where near as humiliating as getting on the scales in front of people and paying for the privilege 😱
