Newbie. Hello.

I have had a couple of episodes of zig zag vision. Really weird. Hard to focus. Similar to coming in from bright sunshine with my reactalite lenses that dont go dark. Anyone else experienced this?

I can't say I have. My eyes are just blurry all the time. Mum's seeing things, she said is their a bloke in our garden? I said no, you're just wishful thinking. 🙄

I occasionally get arcs of zigzags around the periphery of my sight, almost always when I am super-stressed, or been staring at a screen for too long. It clears if I shut my eyes for 15-20 minutes. You might want to google "visual migraine", if worried see GP and/or optometrist!

I may be mistaken (apologies if so), but I think @Northerner has mentioned something similar.

Are you on any meds @Supapam ? The only time I’ve had something similar is when my blood sugar is low.

I’d think it’s worth speaking to your optician and/or GP just for reassurance.

Same as Inka, but there again we're Type1, so when we get the insulin dose to carb calculation wrong, or decide we don't like what we've jabbed for so don't eat it all, hypos happen.

Are you actually on any hypo causing medication?

I'm sure I wasn't hypo when I have had these episodes, not necessarily diabetes related.

Low blood glucose (hypos) can cause visual disturbance, flashing, lights, blackouts etc, but it’s hard to know if that is likely in your case without knowing a bit more about your diabetes management, and as @silentsquirrel says, there can be many other causes too.

Might be worth mentioning to your GP, or at your next optician’s appointment?

I have had a couple of times when my vision became just dancing zigzags, so I was effectively blind. They were a long time ago now - and I can't tell you why they happened - but they were only brief and they seemed to leave no after effects. I did go on to develop migraines and a different optical effect of diamond shapes. After a general anaesthetic at the dentist where he probably gave me too much - I did not go under easily, I was left with the impression that I was looking through binoculars or two tubes, so I conjecture that it is some effect of reduced oxygen in general, or perhaps a small obstruction or reduction in blood supply which disturbs vision.

Managed to speak to my Diabetes nurse. Advised to keep a record as could def be sign of low sugar. May need to adjust gliclazide.

Sensible advice @Supapam Gliclazide can cause hypos and they’re definitely something you want to avoid.

Do you test your own blood sugar? If so, you could test when you get this. I have Type 1 and am on insulin, but I remember ‘eye issues’ being the first hypo sign I noticed. Sometimes it was obvious, sometimes more subtle.

Take care and always keep your hypo treatments with you just in case.

Well when I was Gliclazide I got a number of hypos with visual disturbance, I knew because I tested and I was definitely hypo!
