Hi Beany21, welcome to the forum
🙂 Are you on any medication for your diabetes? We have a very supportive weight-loos section here, so please feel free to join in!
Have you been on, or been offered a diabetes education course, such as XPert or DESMOND (your PCT may have their own version) - many people find that they can really make a difference and the experience of spending time with others in the same boat can be very rewarding and motivational.
The key to good control, I believe, is education. If you understand what is going on then you can take active and practical steps to improving things. Has your doctor prescribed blood glucose testing strips so that you can monitor the effects of various foods on your levels? If not, then you should try and persuade him/her to do so (you may have a bit of a battle, as many doctors do not believe you need to test unless you are on insulin).
I would highly recommend reading
Jennifer's Advice and
Maggie Davey's letter, and also getting a copy of
Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker - these will all help your understanding of diabetes and how best to tackle it. Also, a very suitable diet for people with diabetes is the Glycaemic Load Diet, which promotes slow-release of glucose into your blood so you have a steady source of energy without sending your levels high. A good book on the subject is
The GL Diet for Dummies.
Please feel free to aks any questions you may have - nothing is considered 'silly' and there are lots of people willing and able to help!
